Olivier Messiaen&#8217;s liminal <strong><em>Mode de valeurs et d&#8217;intensit\u00e9s<\/em><\/strong>, then nurtured by glorious new music tradition of <strong><em>Darmst\u00e4dter Ferienkurse<\/em><\/strong> (Darmstadt Summer Courses), which stretched from the 50&#8217;s through the 70&#8217;s, the Darmstadt-K\u00f6ln corridor shook the world with revolutionary experiments in the multi-dimensional organization of sound by means of row-techniques, tape music, <em>musique concr\u00e8te<\/em>, use of short-wave radio, and the pioneering set-up of the world&#8217;s premier electronic music studio at the <strong><em>Westdeutscher Rundfunk<\/em><\/strong> in K\u00f6ln.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1238\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Luigi-Nono-ai-registratori-foto-Archivio-di-Fonologia-Teche-Rai.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1238\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238\" title=\"Luigi Nono ai registratori (foto, Archivio di Fonologia Teche Rai)\" src=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Luigi-Nono-ai-registratori-foto-Archivio-di-Fonologia-Teche-Rai.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luigi Nono ai registratori (foto, Archivio di Fonologia Teche Rai)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><em>Darmstadt School<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, a phrase coined for these activities\u00a0in 1958 by the Italian pioneer of spatialized music, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luigi_Nono\">Luigi Nono<\/a>, was initially associated with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karlheinz_Stockhausen\">Karlheinz Stockhausen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruno_Maderna\">Bruno Maderna<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Boulez\">Pierre Boulez<\/a>, and Nono himself, and then later with other composers, e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luciano_Berio\">Luciano Berio<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earle_Brown\">Earle Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Niccol%C3%B2_Castiglioni\">Niccol\u00f2 Castiglioni<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldo_Clementi\">Aldo Clementi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franco_Donatoni\">Franco Donatoni<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franco_Evangelisti\">Franco Evangelisti<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karel_Goeyvaerts\">Karel Goeyvaerts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mauricio_Kagel\">Mauricio Kagel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gottfried_Michael_Koenig\">Gottfried Michael K\u00f6nig<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giacomo_Manzoni\">Giacomo Manzoni<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henri_Pousseur\">Henri Pousseur<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iannis_Xenakis\">Iannis Xenakis (\u0399\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2 \u039e\u03b5\u03bd\u03ac\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A political edge ran through these efforts, as these pioneers were writing their music in the aftermath of World War II, when many composers had had their music appropriated and used for propaganda purposes by the Nazis. To keep this from happening again, the Darmstadt School attempted to create a new, a-national style of music, and succeeded in creating a vibrant, proudly transnational community of new music explorers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1216\" style=\"width: 409px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Hymnen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1216\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1216\" title=\"Hymnen\" src=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Hymnen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Hymnen.png 399w, https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Hymnen-300x273.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stockhausen: Hymnen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nowhere is this political current more clear than in Stockhausen&#8217;s 1967 electronic masterpiece <strong><em>Hymnen<\/em><\/strong>, realized at the WDR studio, which folds, spindles, mutilates, subverts, and transforms the national anthems of many countries into snatches of space melody heard through bursts of short wave by the ears of Sputnik (per the taped voice of Stockhausen&#8217;s collaborator David Johnson in the &#8220;Region III&#8221; movement: &#8220;<em>we have to go from America to Spain \u2013 we have to get across the ocean in a few seconds\u2026!<\/em>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1214\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gesang-der-J\u00fcnglinge.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1214\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1214\" title=\"Gesang der J\u00fcnglinge\" src=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gesang-der-J\u00fcnglinge-300x292.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gesang-der-J\u00fcnglinge-300x292.png 300w, https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gesang-der-J\u00fcnglinge.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stockhausen: Gesang der J\u00fcnglinge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Electronic, tape, and electro-acoustic works like Stockhausen&#8217;s <strong><em>Hymnen<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Gesang der J\u00fcnglinge<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Kontakte<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Mixtur<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Mikrophonie I<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Mikrophonie II<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Telemusik<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Solo<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Mantra<\/em><\/strong>, &amp; <strong><em>Sirius<\/em><\/strong>, were (and continue to be) boundary-shattering and fresh, and are still making the heads of new listeners explode to this day. Another touchstone will be the <strong><em>piano<\/em><\/strong>, a key instrument for Stockhausen from his early days working his way through school as a jazz pianist to his brilliant series of <strong><em>Klavierst\u00fccke<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_394\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a I&#8217;ve developed in response to the question, &#8220;What if Boulez had been born in Bombay 40 years later?&#8221;, especially via another tie-in to space with the Saturnian extended meta-r\u0101ga\u00a0<strong><em>\u015aani-Ha\u1e6daka\u1e45gi (<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u0936\u0928\u093f<\/strong><strong><em>&#8211;<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u0939\u091f\u0915\u0919\u0940<\/strong><strong><em>).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> developed by extending the two 13-note rows from Stockhausen&#8217;s 2-piano classic,\u00a0<strong><em>Mantra,<\/em><\/strong> into meta-r\u0101gas by means of modulo-arithmetic operations and creating row-based themes used in both composed and improvised sections of a South-Indian <em>pallavi-anupallavi<\/em> form.<\/p>\n<p>It will be my great honor to intertwine these improvisatory
