subtraction<\/em><\/strong> for this mixed laptop-piano show, introducing structures, procedures and meta-r\u0101gas based around missing and disappearing elements, for example:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;scale degrees&#8221; that must be omitted on the ascent or descent&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; key &#8220;scale degrees&#8221; that must never be sounded or executed \u2014 around which style=\"color: #ff0000;\">9pm<\/span>): <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>A Cloud Has A Form But No Edges<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2026and after we get there, we can experience the masters of <em>musique degr\u00e9 z\u00e9ro, <\/em><strong><em>A Cloud Has A Form But No Edges<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The members of this group form a paranormal research society focused on musical phenomena which may or may not exist, at the edges of conventional instrumental sound.<\/p>\n<p>Artists of sonic space whose musical gestures and split multiphonics\u00a0evoke the gaps and transparencies of dry-brush &#8220;flying white&#8221; <strong><em>(<strong><em><strong>\u98db\u767d<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>)<\/em><\/strong> calligraphy, the members of this ensemble trace out the lines and textures of a moir\u00e9 pattern between being and nothingness.<\/p>\n<p>As quantum ripples of space\/time\/info are found at the extremes of super-low temperature superconductivity, vanishing particles, and recursive self-modifying code, so <strong><em>A Cloud Has A Form But No Edges<\/em><\/strong> pursues quantum ripples of listening at the edges of musical reality by means of the subtle application of a styrofoam plate to a koto, a bicycle chain to a contrabass, multiphonics\u00a0that should be impossible, and other extended techniques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Cloud Has A Form But No Edges <\/strong>is got fried courtesy of John Coltrane, sending him off into an extended exploration of jazz harmony, theory, and composition, while playing in numerous combos and large ensembles.<\/p>\n<p>This eventually led him to realize his goal was beyond&#8230; in the worlds of non-idiomatic free improv.<\/p>\n<p>Using an unadorned, pure sound as his template, Kristian rigorously explores and extracts from his instrument the melodies, rhythms, harmonies, and textures needed to express or complement a given moment of the improv.<\/p>\n<p>Kristian has studied with a number of leading improvisers in various genres, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joe-morris.com\">Joe Morris<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/stevelantner.com\">Steve Lantner<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/gerald-cleaver-mn0000945381\">Gerald Cleaver<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ochs.cc\/\">Larry Ochs<\/a>, <strong><em>Bill Bell<\/em><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/morrisacevedomusic\/biography\">Morris Acevedo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/libertyellman.com\/bio.html\">Liberty Ellman<\/a>, <a He&#8217;s worked with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsymphony.org\">San Francisco Symphony<\/a> and most of the area\u2019s regional orchestras, performed contemporary concert music with the <a href=\"http:\/\/music.berkeley.edu\/performance\/ensemble\/bnmp.php\">Eco Ensemble<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sfcmp.org\">San Francisco Contemporary Music Players<\/a>, and accompanied 20th century opera productions with <a href=\"http:\/\/operaparallele.org\">Opera Parall\u00e8le<\/a>. His playing embraces both rough-edged intensity and disciplined instrumental technique.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 Jacob\u00a0founded the acoustic grind duo <a href=\"http:\/\/ettrick.org\">Ettrick<\/a> with <strong><em>Jay Korber<\/em><\/strong>. Both double on drums and saxophones in a style often described as a hybrid of free jazz and black metal.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob has worked extensively with double bassist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/tonydryerbass\">Tony Dryer<\/a>, in a variety of groups such as <strong><em>Wormses<\/em><\/strong> (with Loachfillet) and <strong><em>Addleds<\/em><\/strong> (with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kylebruckmann.com\/\">Kyle Bruckmann<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/kanokonishi\">Kanoko Nishi<\/a>). Their trio with <strong><em>&#8220;Jacob L&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> released the fantastic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heule.us\/ideaofwest\/\"><strong><em>Idea of West<\/em><\/strong><\/a> on Creative Sources in 2008. Jacob and Tony also have a trio CD with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springgardenmusic.com\/\">Jack Wright<\/a>, and have performed live with diverse musicians such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.efi.group.shef.ac.uk\/mdoneda.html\">Michel Doneda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dronedisco.com\/\">C. Spencer Yeh<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ginorobair.com\/\">Gino Robair<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.balancepointacoustics.com\/damon.php\">Damon Smith<\/a>. Although her primary training is in classical piano performance, she\u2019s also interested in improvisational music making, both solo and in collaborations with other artists. Her mastery of various extended techniques on the piano and koto (\u7b8f), in addition to more traditional techniques, is brilliant and has widened the rage of vocabularies on each instrument and enabled them to adapt to different musical genres.
