The difference is that, unlike the yakitori joint, the <strong>SIMM Series<\/strong> is a spaceship that travels to other musical dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>An acoustic-centered sister of the Luggage Store Series, SIMM has brought the best cutting-edge acoustic jazz and avant-garde musicians in and out of the Bay Area to SF audiences and delivered one musical adventure after another. It&#8217;s my honor to return to this series.<\/p>\n<p>=================================<\/p>\n<p><strong>My set (#2) for piano, percussion, and an undisclosed instrument, will include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A composition + improv in one of the warmest and most serene r\u0101gas of North Indian music, <strong>\u0930\u093e\u0917<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>\u0906\u0938\u093e\u0935\u0930\u0940<\/strong><strong> (R\u0101ga \u0100s\u0101var\u012b), <\/strong>from my new album <strong>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joelasqo.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/10\/album-release-turquoise-sessions-available-18-oct-2011\/\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Turquoise Sessions<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><strong>&#8220;<\/strong>, which will be available at the show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A very unique interpretation of &#8220;<strong>So What<\/strong>&#8221; by trumpet master Miles Davis, deconstructed and reconstructed according to various linguistic theories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; By request, an extended version of \ud53c\uc544\ub178<strong> <\/strong>\uc0b0\uc870<strong> \u2014 <\/strong>\uc774\uc0dd\uac15\ub958<strong> (Piano Sanjo, after Yi Saenggang)<\/strong>, with a new interlude refracting this traditional Korean improv form through the prisms of French piano music &amp; jazz<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The first public performance of a new meta-r\u0101ga, <strong>\u0930\u093e\u0917<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>\u092e\u094d\u092f\u0949\u092c\u093f\u0909\u0938<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>\u0915\u0941\u0902\u0921\u0932\u093f\u0924<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>\u0935\u0915\u094d\u0930\u0924\u093e<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>\u092c\u094b\u0927\u093f\u091a\u093f\u0924\u094d\u0924<\/strong><strong> (R\u0101ga\u00a0M\u00f6bius Helix Bodhicitta)<\/strong>. An al\u0101p to a larger piece, &#8220;<strong>Not Sudden. Not Gradual<\/strong>&#8221; in a meta-r\u0101ga whose serial scale steps trace a spiral in multiple dimensions of musical sound. Like an array of linear algebra variables, the\u00a0meta-r\u0101ga&#8217;s\u00a0scale steps may contain functions or procedures as well as values.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Naturally there will be some surprises&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>=================================<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set 1 will be Bob Marsh and Rent Romus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bob Marsh, is a mad cellist\/bassist\/pianist\/guitarist\/found-instrumentist\/vocalist\/+++ (&amp; tap-dancer), inventor of many sonic suits &amp; personae (Butoh Bob, Dr. Bob, Mr. Mercury, etc.), and curator of Music in Motion series<\/p>\n<p>Rent Romus is a titan of wildly expressionist free jazz sax, leader of Lords of Outland, and a principal conspirator in the Luggage Store Series, SIMM, Outsound.org, and Edgetone Records.<\/p>\n<p>Little is certain about the encounter between these two except that Bob will play the piano and the fabric of space-time will be altered due to the high sonic energies released.<\/p>\n<p>Some quotes from <strong>Bob Marsh<\/strong> may\/may not shed light into the quantum box:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2026The only thing I really liked was the Hannon Finger Exercises. It was a finger dance on the keys\u2026 Steve Reich realized that the piano was an interesting series of tuned drums. So the notes boil down to: My approach to playing the piano is that it is a percussive finger\/hand\/arm dance\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, I am a &#8220;body player&#8221;\u2026. A little theory is in my head\u2026 I am a modal player, akin to the raga approach.
