I\u2019m honored to host two of the Bay Area\u2019s most talented shakuhachi players, Cornelius Shinzen (<\/em><\/strong>\u6df1\u7985<\/em><\/strong>) Boots<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and Karl Young<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, for two special acoustic sets at 4pm<\/span><\/strong> and 5pm, Wed 12 June<\/span><\/strong> during my regular booking at Viracocha<\/span> <\/strong>(NW corner of 21st & Valencia, San Francisco<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Long-time disciples under masters of the traditional Japanese honkyoku<\/em> (\u672c\u66f2)\u00a0repertoire, Karl & Cornelius have also taken the shakuhachi into explorations beyond its usual space with unique \u00e9lan<\/em>, ranging the gamut from “heavy chamber” covers of Black Sabbath<\/em><\/strong> to unique Asian takes on jazz classics, while keeping musical company with virtuosi of trad-shak like Michael Chikuzen (\u7af9\u7985) Gould<\/a> and\u00a0Riley Lee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

East Bay reed renegade Cornelius Boots is a progressive rock & “heavy chamber music” composer, bass clarinet virtuoso, wu wei woodwind instructor & Zen flute adept. He is a dabbler in Tibetan mysticism and Taoist wizardry, & a devotee of the Respirational Arts.<\/p>\n

Recent projects include the composing, calligraphic notation and recording of a series of 27 \u00e9tudes (mukyoku, <\/em>\u7121\u66f2) for taimu shakuhachi (<\/em>\u5927\u7121\u5c3a\u516b, <\/em>large Zen bamboo flute), performances and recordings with the elemental sound-structuring ensemble, Sabbaticus Rex<\/em><\/strong><\/a> <\/em><\/strong>(taimu shakuhachi<\/em>, throat singing, large overtone gongs), and the collaborative composing of an avant-orchestral rock opera, An American Faust<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since 1996 he has led and written virtuosic \u201cheavy chamber music\u201d for Edmund Welles<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the world\u2019s only original bass clarinet quartet, with whom he’s released 3 albums: Imagination Lost<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Tooth & Claw<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and Agrippa\u2019s 3 Books<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The quartet had featured recitals at Clarinetfest and Switchboard Music Festival, received a Chamber Music America New Works grant, and has shared the stage with Medeski, Martin and Wood<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and Extra Action Marching Band<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In addition to receiving a Jun Shihan<\/em> (\u6e96\u5e2b\u7bc4) ranking from shakuhachi Grandmaster Michael Chikuzen (\u7af9\u7985) Gould<\/a>,\u00a0he has music degrees from Indiana University (BM Clarinet Performance, BS Audio Recording, MM Jazz Studies) where he studied with Howard Klug<\/a>, David Baker<\/a>, Alfred Prinz<\/a>, David Pickett<\/a> and Wayne Jackson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Murasaki Ensemble (\u7d2b\u30a2\u30f3\u30b5\u30f3\u30d6\u30eb) - Karl Young above bass<\/p><\/div>\n

After an initial period as a jazz tenor saxophonist, Karl Young embarked on a career as a physicist and entered an intensive study of the shakuhachi. Over the past 20 years he has studied with a number of teachers; his primary sensei are Kaoru Kakizakai (\u67ff\u583a\u9999)<\/a> and Riley Lee<\/a>, both masters in the dokyoku<\/em> (\u9053\u66f2) tradition, and students of Katsuya Yokoyama (\u6a2a\u5c71\u52dd\u4e5f)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While his focus has been on the traditional solo honkyoku<\/em> repertoire in the dokyoku<\/em> tradition he also plays sankyoku<\/em> (\u4e09\u66f2) or traditional ensemble music with shamisen<\/em> & koto<\/em>, as well as\u00a0min’y\u014d<\/em> (\u6c11\u8b21) or Japanese folk music. He is co-founder of the group Ensohza <\/em>(<\/strong>\u7e01\u56c3\u5ea7<\/strong>)<\/strong><\/a>, specializing in traditional minyo and Japanese folk dance, in which he plays the shinobue<\/em> (\u7be0\u7b1b) or transverse bamboo flute in addition to\u00a0the shakuhachi. He also participates in the East-West Murasaki Ensemble <\/em>(<\/strong>\u7d2b\u30a2\u30f3\u30b5\u30f3\u30d6\u30eb<\/strong>)<\/strong><\/a>, led by Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto (\u6751\u672c\u548c\u4e16)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He couldn’t help wandering back to his roots and recently worked with jazz flutist Ali Ryerson<\/a> on developing an approach to jazz shakuhachi. He subsequently released\u00a0Lost In The Wood<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a CD of jazz standards and original pieces in an exploration of the expressive possibilities for shakuhachi in jazz. He has recently been playing jazz in various ensemble formats around the San Francisco Bay and “Mendonoma” areas.<\/p>\n

Viracocha<\/strong> is a unique polyvalent zone spread over several levels at the NW corner of 21st & Valencia, San Francisco<\/a>, that functions as post-modern antique shop, piano lounge \/ performance space, lending library, gallery, and all-purpose cultural node.
