Valencia, San Francisco<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Long-time disciples under masters of the traditional Japanese <em>honkyoku<\/em> (\u672c\u66f2)\u00a0repertoire, Karl &amp; Cornelius have also taken the shakuhachi into explorations beyond its usual space with unique <em>\u00e9lan<\/em>, ranging the gamut from &#8220;heavy chamber&#8221; &#8220;heavy chamber music&#8221; composer, bass clarinet virtuoso, wu wei woodwind instructor &amp; Zen flute adept. The quartet had featured recitals at Clarinetfest and Switchboard Music Festival, received a Chamber Music America New Works grant, and has shared the stage with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mmw.net\"><strong><em>Medeski, Martin and Wood<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepytimegorillamuseum.com\"><strong><em>Sleepytime Gorilla Museum<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/extra-action.com\"><strong><em>Extra Action Marching Band<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to receiving a <em>Jun Shihan<\/em> (\u6e96\u5e2b\u7bc4) ranking from shakuhachi Grandmaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chikuzenstudios.com\/\">Michael Chikuzen (\u7af9\u7985) Gould<\/a>,\u00a0he has music degrees from Indiana University (BM Clarinet Performance, BS Audio Recording, MM Jazz Studies) where he studied with <a href=\"http:\/\/howardklug.com\">Howard Klug<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidbakermusic.org\">David Baker<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fugato.com\/press\/fp\/fp01.html\">Alfred Prinz<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fugato.com\/pickett\/index.shtml\">David Pickett<\/a> and <strong>Wayne jazz tenor saxophonist, Karl Young embarked on a career as a physicist and entered an intensive study of the shakuhachi. Over the past 20 years he has studied with a number of teachers; his primary sensei are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kakizakai.com\/\">Kaoru Kakizakai (\u67ff\u583a\u9999)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rileylee.net\/\">Riley Lee<\/a>, both masters in the <em>dokyoku<\/em> (\u9053\u66f2) tradition, and students of <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Katsuya_Yokoyama\">Katsuya Yokoyama (\u6a2a\u5c71\u52dd\u4e5f)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While his focus has been on the traditional solo <em>honkyoku<\/em> repertoire in the <em>dokyoku<\/em> tradition he also plays <em>sankyoku<\/em> (\u4e09\u66f2) or traditional ensemble music with <em>shamisen<\/em> &amp; <em>koto<\/em>, as well as\u00a0<em>min&#8217;y\u014d<\/em> (\u6c11\u8b21) or Japanese folk music. He is co-founder of the group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensohza.org\/\"><strong><em>Ensohza <\/em>(<\/strong><strong>\u7e01\u56c3\u5ea7<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><\/a>, specializing in traditional minyo and Japanese folk dance, in which he plays the <em>shinobue<\/em> (\u7be0\u7b1b) or transverse bamboo flute in addition to\u00a0the shakuhachi. He also participates in the East-West <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murasakiensemble.com\"><strong><em>Murasaki Ensemble <\/em>(<\/strong><strong>\u7d2b\u30a2\u30f3\u30b5\u30f3\u30d6\u30eb<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><\/a>, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murasakiensemble.com\/shirley_muramoto.htm\">Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto (\u6751\u672c\u548c\u4e16)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#8217;t help wandering back to his roots and recently worked with jazz flutist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aliryerson.com\/\">Ali Ryerson<\/a> on developing an approach to jazz shakuhachi. He subsequently released\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/karlshak.com\/OnePage_low_res.pdf\">Lost In The Wood<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a CD of jazz standards and original pieces in an exploration of the expressive possibilities for shakuhachi in jazz.
