Many, many happy memories for both Biggi and myself.<\/p>\n<p>A pioneer of blending voice samples and &#8220;found music&#8221; with wind instruments, Biggi has contributed other samples to these Conversely, cello playing has completely re-wired the way she approaches electronic composition. This approach explores the musical and intellectual legacy of masters such as Steve <strong>Lacy<\/strong>, Denis <strong>Charles<\/strong>, Ornette <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornettecoleman.com\">Coleman<\/a>, and Thelonious <strong>Monk<\/strong> with the goal of creating something unique and new. I started playing and studying klezmer music, which has a virtuosic clarinet tradition. I began to think about how to use the clarinet in jazz and improvised music\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Steve Lacy provided a good example. He had devoted himself solely to the soprano saxophone and his music really touched me. I was playing in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Klezmorim\"><strong>The Klezmorim<\/strong><\/a> and for some reason there were a bunch of tours in France that included hanging out for a week or two in Paris between gigs. I used to go down to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturekiosque.com\/jazz\/portrait\/sunsidesunset.html\">Sunset<\/a> to listen to Steve and ask him for a lesson. Finally he relented\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In Sweden I met Ziya <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RZ-kozZgkiQ\">Aytekin<\/a> (\u0417\u0438\u044f <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RZ-kozZgkiQ\">\u0410\u0439\u0442\u0435\u043a\u0438\u043d<\/a>),\u00a0a traditional zurna player from the Caucasus. \u00a0I heard how much his music had in common with, for example, the late work of John <strong>Coltrane<\/strong>. I wondered if I could use klezmer music to explore this connection between the traditional and the \u201cavant-garde.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One day I got together with Dan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayimproviser.com\/artistdetail.asp?artist_id=242\">Seamans<\/a> and Kenny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wollesonic.com\/index.php?p=Home&amp;l=en\">Wollesen<\/a>, with whom I had often played traditional klezmer music\u2026 This group became <strong>New Klezmer Trio<\/strong>. Joe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joelovano.com\/\">Lovano<\/a> said that Mel Lewis could play a downbeat that was so strong it would last for eight bars.\u00a0 Perhaps there are some downbeats that keep ringing for the rest of your life.\u00a0 For me, <strong>New Klezmer Trio<\/strong> was this downbeat\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I received a Master of Arts degree in Music Composition from <strong>Mills College<\/strong>, where I studied musical analysis with David <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mills.edu\/academics\/faculty\/mus\/davidb\/davidb_cv.php\">Bernstein<\/a>, and composition with Alvin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alvincurran.com\/\">Curran<\/a>, Pauline <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulineoliveros.us\/\">Oliveros<\/a>, and Christian <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_Wolff_(composer)\">Wolff<\/a> [and received\u2026] a Jazz Study Grant from the <strong>National Endowment for the Arts<\/strong> which funded private study with the saxophonist Joe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joelovano.com\/\">Lovano<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Guitarist John <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnschott.com\/\">Schott<\/a> and I began working on music of the bebop era \u2014 Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. We soon found the songs transformed through elongation, repetition, dwelling, thickening the melody, and other approaches\u2026 Further study involved the post-serialist notion of combinatorial structures containing a specified number of notes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among many awards, a recent one is <strong>2011 Downbeat Critics\u2019 Poll<\/strong>, which named Ben as the <strong>#1 Rising Star Clarinetist<\/strong>. Goethe&#8217;s writings allow the observer to &#8220;see&#8221; nature as an interconnected web of relationships, not as unrelated, independent parts-and to develop a deeper understanding and intuitive connection. After touring Europe and the US with various ensembles, she attended HB Studio in New York City where she studied theatre, movement and voice and then went on to earn an MFA from Mills College, where she studied violin with David <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresherensemble.org\/concertmusic\/electroacoustic\/performers\/davidabel.html\">Abel<\/a> and composition and improvisation with Fred <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredfrith.com\/\">Frith<\/a> and Roscoe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artensembleofchicago.com\/roscoe.html\">Mitchell<\/a> and won the Margaret Lyon prize for excellence in music. She is currently working as a solo artist as well as a member of various ensembles.
