Infected by bebop at a tender age, Jim first took up the trombone in Minnesota, and by Mai \u201968 was playing flute & sax, living in Paris, and jamming and performing with musicians like\u00a0Sunny Murray<\/a>, <\/em><\/strong>Albert Ayler, <\/em>Sun Ra, <\/em><\/strong>Archie Shepp<\/a> &\u00a0Anthony Braxton<\/a>, then shortly afterward beginning his musical association with\u00a0Steve Lacy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jim Ryan<\/p><\/div>\n

After stretching the boundaries of improv with the \u201cFree Music Formation\u201d in Paris and other European cities, Jim returned to the US, first jolting the scene in Washington, D.C., then moving to the Bay Area not so long before the Loma Prieta Earthquake (coincidence\u2026<\/em>?)<\/p>\n

Since then, Jim has led a remarkable variety of improv groups, e.g.\u00a0Green Alembic<\/span><\/strong>, Dark Precursor<\/strong>,\u00a0Forward Energy<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Left Coast Improv Group<\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0Electro\/Acoustic Sextet of Oakland, <\/em>Subjects of Desire<\/strong>, and\u00a0Retro Blue<\/strong>, as well as participating in\u00a0Marco Eneidi\u2018s<\/a> American Jungle Orchestra<\/strong>. and the\u00a0Orchestra for World Peace<\/strong> of\u00a0Sun Ra<\/strong> trumpeter Eddie Gale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those who\u2019ve heard Jim play have never been the same, and, after hearing his poems about surrealist elf sexuality, or seeing the powerful color energies of his paintings, are often never the same all over again.<\/p>\n

Green Alembic<\/p><\/div>\n

Green Alembic<\/span><\/strong> is Jim\u2019s \u201cnew approach to multimedia presentation of Image, Word, & Sound\u201d \u2026 the group transmutes projections of original art used as graphical scores and spoken word into rare musical elements. The music is inspired by images which are projected throughout the performance, by spoken word pieces, and by spontaneous interactions among the musicians. The group\u2019s aesthetic is focused upon the immediate creation of musical ideas, clear articulation, and sensitivity to the unfolding sonic and visual environment.<\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0Jim Ryan<\/strong><\/a> (kalimba, flute, horn, word, original images & leader), the line-up will also include:<\/p>\n

Doug Carroll & friend<\/p><\/div>\n

Doug Carroll<\/a> is a cellist, composer, and audio engineer and has a BA in Music from the University of Alabama and an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College. Doug attended music classes at the Royal Conservatory in Den Hague and Darmstadt International Summer Courses. \u00a0He completed composition studies including with Karlheinz Stockhausen<\/strong>, Lou Harrison<\/strong> and Anthony Braxton<\/a>; additionally, he performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> world premier of Ocean<\/em><\/strong>, with music composed by John Cage<\/strong>. With an emphasis in improvisation, Doug has also performed at Seattle Improvised Music Festival, Sound Symposium, and the Birmingham Improvised Music Festival with Davey Williams<\/a> and LaDonna Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Michael Cooke<\/a>, a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer of jazz and classical music. He plays a variety of instruments — saxophones, fluteS, soprano and bass clarinets, and has a deep relationship with the bassoon.\u00a0 Recently he has incorporated the Chinese sh\u0113ng (\u7b19), a free reed instrument, into this arsenal.\u00a0 He is a cum laude graduate with a music degree from the University of North Texas.<\/p>\n

Ron Heglin<\/a> is a trombonist and vocalist working with extended technique on the trombone and with spoken and sung imaginary languages. His voicing has been influenced by his study of North Indian vocal music. He works both compositionally and in an improvisational mode. He has been a member of the Bay Area music context for over twenty-five years and has performed internationally.<\/p>\n

Jeff Hobbs (L) & Bob Marsh (R)<\/p><\/div>\n

Jeff Hobbs<\/a> is an Oakland resident, instrument repair artist at \u2018Best Instrument Repair\u2019 on 14th St. in downtown Oakland, and a ubiquitous presence on the improv, poetry slam, and outlandish Eastbaynia rock and R&B scenes.\u00a0 He plays violin, doublebass, cornet, various clarinets as well as several other instruments. It\u2019s great to have Jeff\u2019s sonic inspiration as a bandmate in Aaron\u00a0Bennett\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/strong> too!<\/p>\n

Jason Hoopes and friends...<\/p><\/div>\n

Jason Hoopes<\/a> is a bassist and composer from Oakland. He can be seen performing with Jack O\u2019 The Clock<\/strong><\/a>, Fred Frith<\/strong><\/a> Trio<\/strong>, Eat The Sun<\/strong>, Dominique Leone<\/a>, John Ettinger<\/a>, Sarah Wilson<\/a>, John <\/strong>Schott<\/a>, ROVA Saxophone Quartet<\/strong><\/a>, and numerous others. Jason also works in dance, composing music for choreographers Peiling Kao<\/a> (\u9ad8<\/a>\u6c9b\u9f61), Molissa Fenley<\/a>, and Alyce Finwall<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n

ChrIstina Stanley<\/p><\/div>\n

Christina Stanley<\/a> is a Bay Area violinist, composer, vocalist and artist. She is active as a performer, improviser, electronic musician and teacher. She has performed in Europe, the continental US, and Cuba as a vocalist, violinist and electronic musician. She has played SF MOMA and has premiered works by Roscoe Mitchell<\/a> under conductor Petr Kotik<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He works and has worked with a wide range of Bay Area rock bands including Jack O\u2019 The Clock<\/strong><\/a>, Satya Sena<\/strong><\/a>, The Atomic Bomb Audition<\/strong><\/a>, powerdove<\/strong><\/a>, Host Family<\/strong>, and Dominique Leone<\/a> among others.<\/p>\n

He has shared the stage with a broad host of improvising artists including Phillip Greenlief<\/a>, Larry Ochs<\/a>, Ellen Fullman<\/a>, Theresa Wong<\/a> (\u9ec3<\/a>\u5929\u6b23), Gino Robair<\/a>, Nate Wooley<\/a>, Gretchen Jude<\/a>, Kanoko Nishi-Smith<\/a> (\u897f<\/a>\u9e7f\u4e43\u5b50), Matt Ingalls<\/a>, Kyle Bruckmann<\/a>, Noah Phillips<\/a>, Karl Evangelista<\/a>, and Dohee Lee<\/a> (\uc774<\/a>\ub3c4\ud788), among many others.<\/p>\n

Jason also works with some of the Bay Area\u2019s most exciting modern dancers and his dance compositions can be found at http:\/\/www.jasonhoopes.bandcamp.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jason holds an MA in composition and an MFA in performance and literature from Mills College. He lives with his wife, photographer Carly Hoopes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mark Pino<\/a> began playing percussion at the age of twelve, and has played music regionally, and nationally since 1990.<\/p>\n

Mark Pino<\/p><\/div>\n

Mark studied jazz under Herbie Lewis<\/strong> at New College of California, along with taking private instruction from master jazz drummer Richie Goldberg<\/strong> and master rock drummer Dawn Richardson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Currently, Mark focuses on improvised music, within several different musical\/instrumental configurations, including Cloud Shepherd<\/strong><\/a> (w Andrew Joron<\/a>, Joe Noble<\/strong>, and Brian Lucas<\/a>), The Ruminations<\/strong> (w Rent Romus<\/a>, Bob Marsh<\/a>, Christina Stanley<\/a>, and Markus Hunt<\/a>), and Ear Spray<\/strong><\/a> (w Carlos Jennings<\/a> and Ann O’Rourke<\/a>), among others.<\/p>\n
