The series has included a wide range of artists including Jo\u00eblle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joelle-leandre.com\">L\u00e9andre<\/a>, Carl <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sukothai.com\">Stone<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/delicateear.com\/bio\/\">JHNO<\/a>, Zo\u00eb <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zoekeating.com\">Keating<\/a>, Beth <a href=\"http:\/\/bethcuster.com\">Custer<\/a>, Amy X <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amyxneuburg.com\">Neuburg<\/a>, Moe! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moestaiano.com\">Staiano<\/a>, Miya <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miyamasaoka.com\">Masaoka<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miyamasaoka.com\">\u6b63\u5ca1<\/a>\u307f\u3084), Suki <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayimproviser.com\/artistdetail.asp?artist_id=296\">O&#8217;Kane<\/a>, and many more. Her solo works combine experimental extended vocal techniques, operatic bel canto, found objects, text, and sampled concr\u00e8te sounds. She uses Max\/MSP and Isadora software along with custom MIDI controllers that allow her to manipulate sound and image with physical gestures. Inspired by ongoing changes and upheavals in the earth&#8217;s ecosystem, and by the carbon cycle \u2014 the process through which carbon is exchanged between all terrestrial life forms and domains \u2014 it&#8217;s scored for a chamber ensemble of voice &amp; electronics, viola, cello, bassoon, and percussion, plus immersive, multi-screen video projections.<\/p>\n<p>To compose the music, Pamela wove together melodic motifs inspired by scientific data about the carbon cycle and texts referencing environmental balance and imbalance, playing on the idea of the natural exchange of elements by passing sonic material between the players, as well as exploring audio elements related to the imagery shot at petroleum fields, natural gas locations, and geothermal sites around back-country California, along with carbon-inspired drawings and images of processes involving intense heat and chemical transformations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/73735499\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"CARBON SONG CYCLE Live at BAM\/PFA by Pamela Z and Christina McPhee\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pamelaz.com\/carbonsongcycle.html\"><strong><em>Carbon Song Cycle<\/em><\/strong><\/a> premiered at the Berkeley Art Museum \/ Pacific Film Archive and has toured to Roulette in NYC. at the Conservatorio di Musica, Bologna he earned a DMA. in piano and a MA in composition. music, organized into phrases controlled by breath-time.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been my privilege to work with some of the great shakuhachi players of the Bay Area like Nancy <a href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/nancybeckman\">Beckman<\/a>, Cornelius Shinzen (\u6df1\u7985) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corneliusboots.com\">Boots<\/a>, and Karl <a href=\"http:\/\/karlshak.com\">Young<\/a> who have taught me a lot about riding and letting &#8220;breath&#8221; into my instruments (piano, laptop, percussion) \u2014 instruments which ordinarily could almost be described as &#8220;anti-breath&#8221;. This led to a fascinating series of \u201crenga pieces\u201d based on the Japanese<strong> <\/strong>collaborative improv poetry form, <em>renga<\/em> <strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u9023\u6b4c<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2682\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a <strong><em>Man\u2019y\u014dsh\u016b<\/em> (<\/strong><strong>\u4e07\u8449\u96c6<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>, c. 760 A.D., <em>renga<\/em> evolved into a very sophisticated game played by connoisseurs who used its 5-line stanzas in an interplay of group-improvised linked verses, exchanged among the members of a (usually <em>sake<\/em>-soaked) poetry party.<\/p>\n<div took <em>renga<\/em> to remarkable heights of sophistication, defining an elaborate aesthetic of seasonal symbolism, pivot-stanzas referring to moon and cherry blossoms, and special gold-and-silver dusted papers of different shapes, sizes and colors to brush their poems onto whilst sipping from cups of <em>sake<\/em> brought to them sushi-boat-style by garden streams specially constructed for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Renga-kai<\/em><\/strong> (<strong>\u9023\u6b4c\u4f1a<\/strong>)\u00a0is a new form extending rules based on some of the \u201c<em>renga<\/em> pieces\u201d of John Cage, and their unique transformations \u2014 not only of Japanese verse forms for alcohol-soaked group poetry improv, based on structures of 5 + 7 + 5 + 7 + 7 \u2014 but also of fundamental concepts like \u201cduet\u201d, \u201clistening\u201d and \u201ctime\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2670\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a for his luminous and serene \u201crenga-pieces\u201d, we use the 36-stanza <em>kasen<\/em> <strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u6b4c\u4ed9<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> form of <em>renga<\/em>, re-imagining each 5-line stanza as a duet in 5-line musical units, each filled with 5 or 7 sound-events which replace the 5 or 7 syllables of the original poetic form.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2673\" Indo-Modernist composition of mine in the 3-part South Indian form <em>r\u0101gam-t\u0101nam-pallavi<\/em> (well, not SO traditional\u2026 it&#8217;s on the piano with harmonies\u2026. and for this show, it will be concentrated into a brief piece from a more usual performance time of 40-50 min).<\/p>\n<p>The term <em>r\u0101gam-t\u0101nam-pallavi <\/em>refers to the 3 sections of this form:<\/p>\n<p>(1) <strong><em>r\u0101gam<\/em> (<\/strong>\u0bb0\u0bbe\u0b95\u0bae\u0bcd<strong>)<\/strong> &#8211; slow intro in unmetered time to establish the r\u0101ga<\/p>\n<p>(2) <strong><em>t\u0101nam<\/em> (<\/strong>\u0ba4\u0bbe\u0ba9\u0bae\u0bcd<strong>)<\/strong> &#8211; a section of rhythmic play which is faster and involves using more complex rhythmic phrases<\/p>\n<p>(3) <strong><em>pallavi<\/em> (<\/strong>\u0baa\u0bb2\u0bcd\u0bb2\u0bb5\u0bbf<strong>)<\/strong> &#8211; a presentation of the melody in metered time, faster<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve listened to either North or South Indian classical music, you&#8217;ll find this form not unfamiliar, and it is my hope that you&#8217;ll appreciate the wonderful potential of the piano as a nontraditional instrument for the grand and vital Karnatic tradition of South India.<\/p>\n<p>The r\u0101ga for this program, <strong>Mand\u0101ri<\/strong> (\u0bb0\u0bbe\u0b95\u0bae\u0bcd \u0bae\u0ba8\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bbe\u0bb0\u0bbf), has become an obsession for me of late. Its complex emotional flavor \u2014 warm and yet mysterious, fully feeling the world&#8217;s tragic nature and yet witty and strong \u2014\u00a0is a result of its rich intervallic structures, which geometrically recur in yin and yang positions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the above, I&#8217;ll also join the other players for free improv.
