\"\"<\/a>I have the honor and pleasure to curate several shows in Aug at the East Bay\u2019s indispensable focal point for new music, <\/strong>Berkeley Arts Festival<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<\/em><\/strong>2133 University Avenue, Berkeley, CA \u2013 map<\/em><\/strong><\/a>)<\/em><\/strong>, and this is the first at 8pm, Sun 10 Aug<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We start this series with a show running the gamut from the birth of mechanical<\/strong><\/em> analog synthesis in the crucible of Italian Futurism almost 100 years ago to the cutting edge digital synthesis of tomorrow being invented at Stanford’s\u00a0CCRMA<\/a> computer music research center.<\/p>\n

Mountains In Space: (L \u2192 R) Luke Dahl, Colin Sullivan<\/p><\/div>\n

Set 1: Mountains In Space – Electronic Music from<\/strong> <\/strong>CCRMA<\/a> <\/strong>(<\/strong>8pm<\/span><\/strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mountains in Space<\/strong> perform live ambient electronic music made with\u00a0analog synths, custom algorithms, and field recordings.<\/p>\n

Their music\u00a0is “a time-dilated dive into fractal cosmic jello.”<\/p>\n

Mountains in Space<\/strong> is Luke Dahl<\/strong><\/a> and Colin Sullivan<\/strong><\/a> who met at Stanford’s\u00a0CCRMA<\/a> computer music lab and began\u00a0collaborating musically in 2013.<\/p>\n

Luke Dahl<\/a> started out a pianist & french horn player. After receiving an initial BS in Electrical Engineering from the U. of Michigan he worked on audio technologies at Creative Labs where he helped develop spatialization and reverb techniques for the SoundBlasterLive, and at Apple where he worked on audio for iPod products. Returning to academia full-time he received a Master’s in Music, Science, & Tech in 2007 at\u00a0CCRMA<\/a>, where he now pursues a Ph.D.<\/p>\n

Luke’s research interests include a number of intersections between music and tech:<\/p>\n

Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk) performs Twilight (2013) for laptop orchestra by Ge Wang (\u738b\u6208), Bing Concert Hall, Stanford University, May 2013<\/p><\/div>\n

\u2014\u00a0The design and study of new instruments for musical expression & new performance ensembles based on these instruments. In this context Luke has created instruments and composed works for both the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk)<\/strong><\/a> and the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (Mopho)<\/strong><\/a>, of which he’s a founding member.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The relationship between music and movement, including instrumental performance gesture with traditional & new instruments, movement imagery and metaphors in descriptions of musical experiences, & sonification of movement data.<\/p>\n
