Among Aaron’s many stellar contributions to the Bay Area improv and new music scenes (like sax trio arrangements of Bollywood standards!) \u00a0are fantastic “breathing chart” compositions for large improvising groups that deliver heightened coherence and adventure at the same time. They stand as Himalayas of group improv music. And Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/em><\/strong> is the Mt. Everest.<\/p>\n

Aaron Bennett in Space<\/p><\/div>\n

Bio note: Saxist\/composer Aaron Bennett<\/strong><\/a> has been bending space in the Bay Area jazz and improvised music communities for more than 15 years. Beyond his studies in composition and performance of western music at California Institute of the Arts, Aaron has also studied and played the music of West Africa, Indonesia, India, and Traditional Japanese \u96c5\u697d<\/strong> (Gagaku) music. He has performed throughout the United States and abroad including performances with Wadada Leo Smith<\/a>, Peter Kowald<\/a>, John Butcher<\/a>, Donald Robinson<\/a>, Marco Eneidi<\/a>, Gianni Gebbia<\/a>, Weasel Walter<\/a>, Adam Lane<\/a>, Larry Ochs<\/a>, Steve Adams<\/a>, John Raskin<\/a>, Victoria Williams<\/a>, Aphrodesia<\/a>, Lagos-Roots<\/a>, The Rova Saxophone Quartet<\/a> and many others.<\/p>\n

He leads his own groups Go-Go-Fightmaster<\/a>, Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/a> and performs in the Oakland Active Orchestra<\/a> , Lisa Mezzacappa’s Bait & Switch<\/a>, Vijay Anderson Quartet<\/a>, and Guerilla Hi-Fi<\/a>. Aaron has composed for large ensembles, chamber groups, plays, films, dance performances, wind quintet, saxophone quartets and trios as well as pieces for solo instruments.<\/p>\n

Set 2: Aram Shelton: Octet & others, for sax quartet & processing<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Aram Shelton<\/strong><\/a> composed three minimalist works for an octet of winds and strings via loop pedal back in 2002. For this concert, he\u2019ll re-imagine the first of these, Octet<\/em><\/strong>, for saxophone quartet and processing via Max, bringing the piece close to its initial form. Each saxophone will be live-sampled, and the processed sound will be distributed through the space at CNMAT. Aram will be joined by\u00a0Ritwik Banerji<\/a><\/strong>, Cory Wright<\/strong><\/a> and Jacob Zimmerman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong> They may also play A Rare Thing<\/em><\/strong> (Shelton, 2003), originally played by the 774th Street Quartet<\/a> (Bloody Murder).<\/p>\n

Aram Shelton<\/p><\/div>\n

Aram is very familiar to Bay Area lovers of jazz and new music, leading many ensembles and playing in even more (for example,\u00a0Cylinder<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, one of my favorites)<\/p>\n

Beginning on tenor while growing up on a small ranch in southeast Florida, Aram switched to alto in college, moved to DC and then Chicago, where he played creative jazz and improvised music in many groups, including Dragons 1976<\/a>, Arrive<\/a>, and Rapid Croche<\/a>. Over time he began to use computer-based electronics for the live sampling and manipulation of acoustic instruments, and with Johnathan Crawford<\/a> formed the group Grey Ghost<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Aram moved out west to study electroacoustic music at Mills College and developed compositions that focused on the technique of phrase modification, wherein written phrases played by orchestral instruments are recorded in real time and rearranged via custom built patches in MAX\/MSP.<\/p>\n

Aram\u00a0has performed with a wide variety of talented musicians including Tim Daisy<\/a>, Ken Vandermark<\/a>, Jason Ajemian<\/a>, Josh Berman<\/a>, Audrey Chen<\/a>, Darren Johnston<\/a>, Fred Lonberg-Holm<\/a>, Dave Rempis<\/a>, Damon Smith<\/a>, Steve Bernstein<\/a>, Weasel Walter<\/a>, Jason Roebke<\/a>, Liz Albee<\/a>, Rob Mazurek<\/a>, Matt Bauder<\/a>, Jessica Pavone<\/a>, H\u00e5vard Wiik<\/a>, Josh Abrams<\/a>, Harris Eisenstadt<\/a>, Jeb Bishop<\/a>, Tim Perkis<\/a>, Kevin Drumm<\/a>, Kjell Nordeson<\/a>, Frank Rosaly<\/a>, Guillermo Gregorio<\/a>, and Chris Brown<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Aram’s partners in crime for this outing include monster saxists\u00a0Ritwik Banerji<\/a> <\/strong>(pathfinding creator of AI improvising agent, Maxine<\/em><\/strong>), Cory Wright<\/strong><\/a> (creator of uniquely structured jazz\/post-jazz compositions,\u00a0member in many ensembles<\/a>, and leader of Green Mitchell<\/a> & the Cory Wright Quintet), and Jacob Zimmerman<\/strong><\/a> (organizer\/member of the Lawson Ensemble<\/a> performing music inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Lawsonite people and Anteater<\/a>, specializing in rhythmically complex original music).<\/p>\n
