To quote Aaron: \u201cThe members of this ensemble utilize the electro-magnetic field of their collective mind to attain a unitive transcendent state of sonic consciousness and in turn, create sublime and\/or unusually expanded sonic experiences for their listeners.\u201d<\/p>\n

The electro-magnetic field is tuned and amplified by means of unique \u201cbreathing chart\u201d compositions using a special graphic notation Aaron has designed for large improvising ensembles to focus and unleash aural energies. The resulting sound is like nothing else and has amazed audiences in a string of orgone-accelerating Bay Area performances over the last year.<\/p>\n

Born in San Francisco, Lewis Jordan<\/a> grew up in Chicago\u2026with the blues\u2026 “which he got too from time to time\u2026”<\/p>\n

An international touring and recording musician; poet; actor and playwright, Lewis Jordan<\/a> has bridged the worlds of music and the written word \u2014 through composition, saxophone and poetry.<\/p>\n

He was a founding member of United Front<\/strong>, the seminal San Francisco Bay Area ensemble known for its originality, aggressive imagination and cultural synthesis. Starting as the Lewis <\/strong>Jordan<\/strong><\/a>-George <\/strong>Sams<\/strong><\/a> Quartet<\/strong>, and including bassist Mark Izu<\/a> (\u30de\u30fc\u30af\u30fb\u4f0a\u8c46<\/a>) and drummers Carl Hoffman<\/strong> (<\/strong>and, at times, Anthony Brown<\/a>), United Front<\/strong> is featured in a documentary film, Outside in Sight<\/em><\/strong>, including footage of United Front<\/strong> at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

Of his major ongoing project,\u00a0Music at Large<\/strong>, Lewis\u00a0Jordan<\/a> says:<\/p>\n

“I began Music at Large<\/strong> in 1976, dedicated to interdisciplinary and multicultural productions, with presentations incorporating music, theater, dance, poetry and visual art. Since that time, Music at Large<\/strong> has been a vehicle for producing musical performances of my own and others\u2019 work, plays, and panels. The genesis of the Music at Large<\/strong> is the commitment to bringing people together by bridging arbitrary distinctions that have only served to divide us from ourselves, as well as serving to divide us from others. As the saying goes, \u201cput all my food on the same plate.<\/p>\n

Most recently, the focus of Music at Large<\/strong> has been a performing unit. This group, based in the San Francisco Bay area, features myself on alto and baritone saxophones; Karl Evangelista<\/a> on electric guitar; John-Carlos Perea<\/a> on electric bass and cedar flute; Marshall Trammell<\/a> on drums; and Jimmy Biala<\/a> on percussion.<\/p>\n

The group brings together the music of three major soul food groups: Asian, African and Native American. And, in the process, new recipes are constantly unfolding.”<\/p>\n

Karl Evangelista<\/p><\/div>\n

As well as organizing the Monday Makeout Series<\/strong> and the incendiary Light a Fire Series<\/strong>, Filipino-American guitarist\/composer Karl Evangelista<\/a> ranks among a new wave of creative musicians grounded in jazz, 20th century experimentalism, and popular song, exploring the place of multiculturalism and ethnic co-existence in an increasingly post-cultural, trans-idiomatic cultural space. As the creative force behind boundary breaking group Grex<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Evangelista has been called \u201cessential current-and-future listening, his music \u201ca near-seamless blend of modern jazz, contemporary structuralist composition, indie rock, and blues rock\u201d (Tiny Mix Tapes<\/em>). This complex, powerful aesthetic fosters an \u201cotherworldly experience\u201d that is \u201ccompletely original\u201d (Eugene Weekly<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Karl has explored the possibilities of intercultural dialogues across a vast spectrum of academic and professional situations. Also joining will be Nava Dunkelman<\/a>, percussioniste extraordinaire<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Nava Dunkelman<\/a> (\u30ca\u30f4\u30a1\u30fb\u30c0\u30f3\u30b1\u30eb\u30de\u30f3<\/a>) is a Bay Area percussionist and improviser. Born in Tokyo, and raised in a multi-cultural environment by an American father and Indonesian mother, Nava\u2019s musical interests span the globe from Japanes taiko<\/em> (\u592a\u9f13)\u00a0to Indonesian gamelan to American marching band, and from classical to contemporary to the avant-garde.\u00a0Nava studied percussion under Eugene Novotney<\/a> at Humboldt State University before attending Mills College, where she studied with William Winant<\/a>, as well as Fred Frith<\/a>, Maggi Payne<\/a>, Zeena Parkins<\/a>, and David Bernstein<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n

Since graduating with a degree in music performance in 2013, Nava has performed and collaborated with John Zorn<\/a>, William Winant<\/a>, Fred Frith<\/a>, Chris Brown<\/a>, Dominique Leone<\/a> and many others, as well as formed the improvisational trio Dapplegray<\/strong><\/a> with Jeanie-Aprille Tang<\/a> (\u9127<\/a>\u606c\u6021) and\u00a0Tara Sreekrishnan<\/a> (\u0ba4\u0bbe\u0bb0\u0bbe \u0bb8\u0bcd\u0bb0\u0bc0\u0b95\u0bcd\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0bb7\u0bcd\u0ba3\u0ba9\u0bcd<\/a>) , which debuted in 2012 at The Stone in New York City. She also is a member of two marvelous duos: DunkelpeK<\/strong><\/a> <\/em><\/strong>with Jacob Pek<\/a>, and IMA (<\/strong>\u4eca<\/strong>)<\/strong><\/a> with Jeanie-Aprille Tang<\/a> (\u9127<\/a>\u606c\u6021).\u00a0Through improvisation, Nava enjoys discovering her own musical language by exploring experimental approaches to communication, progression, and space.<\/p>\n

Heikki Koskinen<\/a> is a recording artist, composer, and educator currently living in San Francisco, with main current instruments are piano, the Morrison Digital Trumpet, and the tenor recorder.<\/p>\n

Heikki\u2019s music career began in Finland with playing American Soul music as well as free improvised jazz, with musicians such as Edward Vesala<\/strong>, Juhani Aaltonen<\/a>, and Heikki Sarmanto<\/a>. Heikki received various Finnish composing grants, recorded several albums, and won awards as an innovative children\u2019s music teacher.<\/p>\n

After being chosen in Rytmi<\/em> magazine critics’ polls as Finland\u2019s top jazz trumpet player in the 1970\u2019s, he left his native Finland to study jazz at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (in addition to private studies with Henrik Otto Donner<\/strong>, Charlie Banacos<\/strong> & Jimmy Owens<\/a>).<\/p>\n

His 1980\u2019s Bay Area bands, with Heikki on trumpet, featured such musicians as Hadley Caliman<\/strong>, Steve Heckman<\/a>, Mark Levine<\/a>, Joe Bonner<\/a>, Bennie Green<\/strong>, Larry Hancock<\/a> and Michael Spiro<\/a>.<\/p>\n

(L \u2192 R) Mika Pontecorvo, Heikki Koskinen, and Rent Romus perform in Rent Romus' Other World Cycle, based on the Finnish epic, the Kalevala<\/p><\/div>\n

Lately Heikki has re-connected with his free improvising musical roots, especially with Bay Area sax player Rent Romus<\/a> and the Finnish Kellari<\/strong> (Cellar) Trio<\/strong>, featuring reed player Mikko Innanen<\/a> and bassist Teppo Hauta-aho<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Besides performing and composing, he teaches music in the Bay Area. For ten years he was coordinator and host of the local radio program, Studio Finland<\/em> and he has been a key musical figure in the Bay Area Finnish community for several years.<\/p>\n

\"Adam<\/a>

Adam Lowdermilk<\/p><\/div>\n

With a background strongly rooted in the rich traditions of jazz, funk, and various African and Pan-American musical styles, bassist Adam Lowdermilk<\/a> creates an intellectually and viscerally stimulating music.<\/p>\n

After studies w bassist Stan Poplin and at, Adam studied music performance at Mills College under bassists Peter Barshay, Steven Tramontozzi, and Henry Grimes, as well as Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Frith, William Winant, Christian Wolff, Pauline Oliveros, and Zeena Parkins, while continuing his focus on jazz while exploring free improv, and taking a keen interest in West African music.<\/p>\n

Recent credits include performances with the David Mayfield Parade<\/strong><\/a>, the T Sisters<\/strong><\/a>, Bill Stevens<\/a>, Dahveed Behroozi<\/a> (\u062f\u0627\u0648\u064a\u062f \u0628\u0647\u0631\u0648\u0632\u06cc<\/a>), David Flores<\/a>, Kristen Strom<\/a>, the Jorge Pineda<\/a>\/Larry Douglas<\/a> Alltet<\/strong>, Blackbird Blackbird<\/strong><\/a> (STRFKR Tour), and multiple performances at the Festival International Jazz Plaza in Havana, Cuba with the Will Magid 4<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Currently, Adam performs regularly with Bay Area groups such as\u00a0American Nomad<\/strong><\/a>, Soji Odukogbe<\/strong><\/a> (guitarist of Fela Kuti<\/strong>), Albino! Afrobeat<\/strong><\/a>, and the Justin Ancheta Band<\/strong><\/a>, as well as his own original project Kuckaw!<\/strong><\/a>, which melds funk, afrobeat, and disco with jazz and progressive rock.<\/p>\n

Timothy Orr<\/a> studied with Edward Blackwell<\/strong> at Wesleyan University and has worked in the music industry since then. He has held positions in alternative radio promotion & classical marketing at Virgin Records, publicity at MCA, retail sales at HMV and warehouse & operations management at TVT Records. He spent five years with the Arkadia Jazz label as sales & marketing director, and two-and-a-half years as Associate Director of the Brubeck Institute at University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. He’s also been a journalist for DRUM!<\/em> and Traps<\/em> magazines, and has worked with Oakland’s Jazz In Flight. Timothy joined the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2006, and specializes in marketing, public relations, and communications.<\/p>\n

Timothy has played with a number of musicians in many fields, including local and international artists Josh Roseman<\/a>, Stephen Schwartz<\/a>, Damon Smith<\/a>, John Finkbeiner<\/a>, Josh Allen<\/a>, Marco Eneidi<\/a>, Richard Hell<\/a>, Randy Hunt<\/a>, Henry Kaiser<\/a>, Adam Lane<\/a>, Scott R.\u00a0Looney<\/a>, Rent Romus<\/a>, Aram Shelton<\/a>, Joris Teepe<\/a>, William Winant<\/a>, Key West<\/strong>, and many more.<\/p>\n

Tim plays with a number of Cajun and Zydeco and roots bands as well: Kenny Menard<\/strong>, Motordude<\/strong><\/a>, T\u00eate Rouge<\/strong>, Andre Thierry<\/a>, the Zydeco Flames<\/strong><\/a>, Zydeco Slim<\/strong>, the Royal Deuces<\/strong><\/a>, CZ & the Bon Vivants<\/strong><\/a>, Mark St. Mary<\/a>, and others. He has played over 1600 gigs since 1989 in a variety of venues across the country, and has appeared on a number of CDs in a variety of genres.<\/p>\n

The Godfather of Avant Soul<\/em><\/strong>, organizer of innumerable Bay Area events,\u00a0Rent Romus<\/a>, saxophonist\/multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and producer, is deeply involved in going beyond the confines of standard music forms of composition and improvisation and focused on presenting and supporting the local experimental and avant-garde community. From his beginnings as a student of jazz while being exposed to the tutelage of Stan Getz<\/strong> to today, Rent Romus<\/a> has recorded and released 25+ recordings as a leader which have included Jason Olaine<\/a>, Steve Rossi<\/a>, Chico Freeman<\/a>, John Tchicai<\/a>, Jonas M\u00fcller<\/a>, Stefan Pasborg<\/a>, Toyoji Tomita <\/strong>(\u5bcc\u7530<\/strong>\u8c4a\u6cbb), Dave Mihaly<\/a>, Bill Noertker<\/a>, Collette McCaslin<\/a>, Philip Everett<\/a>, Ray Schaeffer<\/a>, Paris Slim<\/a>, Jesse Quattro<\/a>, Scott R. Looney<\/a>, Bob Marsh<\/a>, Jim Ryan<\/a>, Ernesto Diaz-Infante<\/a>, Tobias Fischer<\/a>, and Thollem Mcdonas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a producer and artist business activist he runs Edgetone Records<\/strong><\/a> a label for all forms of improvisation and experimentation. He is the founder and Executive Director of Outsound Presents<\/strong><\/a> under which he curates the SIMM Series, the Luggage Store Series every Thursday, both in San Francisco, and The Outsound New Music Summit, a national experimental music festival held in the San Francisco Bay Area every summer in July.<\/p>\n
