It\u2019s aways a high-warp adventure to play with this unusual ensemble, and I look forward with special\u00a0pleasure to bringing the superluminal energy of Aaron’s fantastic \u201ccomprov\u201d charts to CNM, together with a great program of festive avant-Bollywood and more from another of Aaron’s projects, Horn of Plenty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Among Aaron\u2019s many stellar contributions to the Bay Area improv and new music scenes (like sax trio arrangements of Bollywood standards) are fantastic \u201cbreathing chart\u201d compositions for large improvising groups that deliver heightened coherence and adventure at the same time. They stand as Himalayas of group improv music. And\u00a0Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/em><\/strong> is the Mt. Everest.<\/p>\n

To quote Aaron: \u201cThe members of this ensemble utilize the electro-magnetic field of their collective mind to attain a unitive transcendent state of sonic consciousness and in turn, create sublime and\/or unusually expanded sonic experiences for their listeners.\u201d<\/p>\n

The electro-magnetic field is tuned and amplified by means of unique \u201cbreathing chart\u201d compositions using a special graphic notation Aaron has designed for large improvising ensembles to focus and unleash aural energies. The resulting sound is like nothing else and has amazed audiences in a string of orgone-accelerating Bay Area performances over the last year.<\/p>\n

Bio note: Saxist\/composer\u00a0Aaron Bennett<\/strong><\/a> has been bending space in the Bay Area jazz and improvised music communities for more than 15 years. Beyond his studies in composition and performance of western music at California Institute of the Arts, Aaron has also studied and played the music of West Africa, Indonesia, India, and traditional Japanese\u00a0\u96c5\u697d\u00a0(Gagaku) music. Aram Shelton<\/p><\/div>\n

Aram Shelton<\/a> is a saxophonist, clarinetist, improviser and composer based in Oakland, where the projects Sound Quartet<\/strong>, Tonal Masher<\/a>, Broken Trap Ensemble<\/a>, and Ton Trio II<\/a> represent his music. He is connected to Chicago (where he lived from 1999 to 2005) through his Quartet<\/a>, the\u00a0 sextet Fast Citizens<\/a>, and Jason Adasiewicz\u2019 Rolldown<\/a>. His writing and playing is grounded in and influenced by the rich history of avant-jazz and free improvisation in America and Europe since the 1950s and has been documented through more than a dozen albums since 2003.<\/p>\n

After studying classical alto sax techniques in college, Aram moved to Chicago and became involved in the city\u2019s creative music scene focusing on alto saxophone and clarinet, playing with Jason Adasiewicz<\/a>, Jason Ajemian<\/a>, Josh Berman<\/a>, Tim Daisy<\/a>, Anton Hatwich<\/a>, Keefe Jackson<\/a>, Fred Lonberg-Holm<\/a>, Jason Roebke<\/a> and Frank Rosaly<\/a>; and began to use Max\/MSP for the live sampling and manipulation of acoustic instruments, primarily with Johnathan Crawford<\/a> in the electro acoustic duo Grey Ghost<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 2005, Aram moved to Oakland to study at Mills College, writing music with a focus on the technique of phrase modification, where phrases played by acoustic instruments are recorded in real time and rearranged via custom built patches in MAX\/MSP, and he continues to improvise and compose electroacoustic music based on these concepts.<\/p>\n

Since moving to California, Aram has developed his ensemble music with groups including musicians Scott Brown<\/strong> & Alex Vittum<\/a> (Ton Trio II)<\/a>; Michael Coleman<\/a> & Alex Vittum<\/a> (Stratic<\/a>); Darren Johnston<\/a>, Lisa Mezzacappa<\/a>, & Kjell Nordeson<\/a> (Cylinder<\/a>); his sextet Marches<\/a>, inspired by the music of Shepp, Ayler & Sun Ra; and the Oakland Active Orchestra<\/strong><\/a>. He also curates the Active Music Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In addition to the above groups, Aram has recently performed with Britt Ciampa<\/a>, Mark Clifford<\/a>, Jordan Glenn<\/a>, Aaron Novik<\/a>, Larry Ochs<\/a>, Safa Shokrai<\/a>, William Winant<\/a> and Cory Wright<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jon Raskin<\/p><\/div>\n

Also joining will be saxophonist & electronic musician Jon Raskin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jon has been a member of Rova Saxophone Quartet<\/strong><\/a> for 3 decades, exploring the relationship of improvisation and composition, developing and honing the language of ensemble music and researching linguistic possibilities of the saxophone.<\/p>\n

Highlights of Rova founding member Jon’s early career include his ’70s participation in new music ensembles directed by composers John Adams<\/a> and Barney Childs<\/strong>. Before Rova<\/strong><\/a>, Jon served as music director of the Tumbleweed Dance Company<\/strong>, was a founding member of the Blue Dolphin Alternative Music Space, and participated in the creation of The Farm \u2014 an art project that included a city farm, a community garden, Ecology Center, Dance and Theater companies and organized the creation of a city park.<\/p>\n

Highlights as a member of Rova<\/strong><\/a> include composing a collaborative work for San Francisco Taiko Dojo<\/strong><\/a>\/Rova<\/strong><\/a>, working with Howard Martin<\/strong> on the installation work Occupancy<\/em><\/strong>, composing music for Mr. Bungle<\/strong><\/a>\/Rova<\/strong><\/a>, organizing the 30 year Anniversary Concert of John Coltrane’s Ascension<\/em><\/strong>, performing the music of Miles Davis<\/strong> at the Fillmore with Yo Miles!<\/em><\/strong>, the Glass Head<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>project with Inkboat<\/strong><\/a> and the ongoing Electric Ascension<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>project.<\/p>\n

Jon has worked and recorded with Liz Allbee<\/a>, Tim Berne<\/a>, Anthony Braxton<\/a>, George Cremaschi<\/a>, Fred Frith<\/a>, Philip Gelb<\/a>, Matthew Goodheart<\/a>, Phillip Greenlief<\/a>, Phillip Johnston<\/a>, Henry Kaiser<\/a>, Pauline Oliveros<\/a>, Kanoko Nishi-Smith<\/a> (\u897f<\/a>\u9e7f\u4e43\u5b50) Dana Reason<\/a>, Gino Robair<\/a>, Sam Rivers<\/strong>, John Shiurba<\/a>, Wadada Leo Smith<\/a>, Vladimir Tarasov<\/a> (\u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0438\u043c\u0438\u0440 \u0422\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0432<\/a>), and poet Carla Harryman<\/a>, among many others.<\/p>\n
