While the preceding nights will be electronics-focused (<strong>28 Jan<\/strong>: <em>Space Drone<\/em>, <strong>29 Jan<\/strong>: <em>Sound Design<\/em>, <strong>30 Jan<\/strong>: <em>Noise<\/em>), <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sat 31 Jan<\/span><\/strong> will end the festival on an <em>Electro-acoustic<\/em> note.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be playing in <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Set 4 (9:15pm sharp)<\/span><\/strong> as part of the neogaku multimedia consort <strong>Mukaiji-kai<\/strong> (<strong>\u9727\u6d77<\/strong><strong>\u7b8e\u4f1a<\/strong>), consisting of Nancy <a href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/nancybeckman\"><strong>Beckman<\/strong><\/a> &amp; Tom <a href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/tombickley\"><strong>Bickley<\/strong><\/a> (just back from their Japan tour\u2026), Nan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dannydancers.com\/Biographies\/BioNanBusse.htm\"><strong>Busse<\/strong><\/a>, Joe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joelasqo.com\/\"><strong>Lasqo<\/strong><\/a>, Suki <a href=\"http:\/\/sukiokane.com\"><strong>O\u2019Kane<\/strong><\/a>, and Bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vjlove.com\/\"><strong>Thibault<\/strong><\/a>, in a modernist transformation of ancient fog-related music from Japanese Zen repertoire, using elements as diverse as video, dance, didgeridoo, shakuhachi, percussion, piano, monster contrabass recorder, and laptop-based electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Other <strong><em>Mukaiji<\/em><\/strong> (<strong>\u9727\u6d77<\/strong><strong>\u7b8e<\/strong>, \u201cFog, Ocean, Flute\u201d) which was received by shakuhachi and Zen master Kyochiku Zenji class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dream  |  \u5922<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our electroacoustic boat drifts through the fog, and sound islands come into earshot, as solos and embedded contrastive pieces emerge from this flowing matrix, in a structure designed by Nancy <a href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/nancybeckman\"><strong>Beckman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This will be preceded by Tom <a href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/tombickley\"><strong>Bickley&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> meditative and translucent piece, <strong><em>Tolling<\/em><\/strong>, which relaxes and opens as it is realized by the href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/nancybeckman\"><strong>Beckman<\/strong><\/a> creates performance pieces, plays and teaches the shakuhachi, and performs with the <strong><em>Cornelius Cardew Choir<\/em><\/strong>. He holds an M.A. in composition from Mills College, where he studied with Pauline <a href=\"http:\/\/paulineoliveros.us\/\">Oliveros<\/a>, Alvin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alvincurran.com\/\">Curran<\/a>, and independently with Lou <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lou_Harrison\">Harrison<\/a>. At Mills, Edward founded The <a href=\"http:\/\/thingamajigs.org\/festival\/\"><strong>Music For People &amp; Thingamajigs Festival<\/strong><\/a>, an annual event in The Bay Area devoted to unusual instruments and tunings.<\/p>\n<p>In 1999-2000 Edward was artist in residence at the now defunct European Dance Development Center in D\u00fcsseldorf, Germany where he took part in and conducted workshops in instrument building, and composer\/choreographer collaborations. Many of his dance-theater collaborations at this time toured throughout Europe and were performed by Jim <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Fulkerson\">Fulkerson<\/a> and members of Amsterdam-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartonworkshop.org\/\"><strong>The Barton Workshop<\/strong><\/a>. In 2004 he composed music for an UNESCO sponsored work with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.echo-arts.info\/index.htm\"><strong>Echo Arts<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 a large bicommunal project in Cyprus that helped build understanding between communities in conflict. His other collaborations in dance\/theatre include multiple works with UK director Angus <a href=\"http:\/\/the-live-legacy-project.com\/guests\/angus-mclean-balbernie\/\">Balbernie<\/a>: <strong><em>Mud Wings<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Nine Days On Dark Water<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>Sassantedue<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Edward\u2019s residencies and commissions include Stanford Lively Arts with Brenton <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bfalling.net\">Cheng<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/stignatiussf.org\/?page_id=424\"><strong>St. Ignatius Choir<\/strong><\/a> directed by Jonathan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathandimmock.com\">Dimmock<\/a> in San Francisco, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fyco.org\"><strong>Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra<\/strong><\/a> directed by Gordon <a href=\"Firebird%20Youth%20Chinese%20Orchestra\">Lee<\/a> in San Jose, and Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo. PuffTron streaming data of &#8220;hyperlocal fog&#8221; will be mapped, sonified, and visualized in a multimedia software framework, combining with sound from modified and unmodified string instruments and live electronics to bring the Fog Music Festival to a grand conclusion. Among the string instruments will be Chris&#8217; own invention, the hybridized electro-acoustic <em>celletto<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At IRCAM (Paris) &amp; The Banff Centre (Alberta), Chris pursued methods for digital synthesis, music performance and real-time internet collaboration. The SoundWIRE project at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrma.stanford.edu\/\">CCRMA<\/a>, which he has been deep involved with, enables live concertizing with musicians the world over, and the online collaboration software, including <strong><em>jacktrip<\/em><\/strong> and research into latency factors, continues to evolve.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-2AzRQwb5eg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An active performer either on the net or physically present, his music reaches audiences in dozens of countries and sometimes at novel venues (for example, <em><strong>Sun Shot<\/strong><\/em>, played by the horns of large ships in the port of St. Johns, Newfoundland).
