Organized by the indefatigable electronic musician and curator, Matt Davignon<\/a>, the electro-acoustic improv vortex<\/strong> will take forward the grand tradition of chance-generated small improv ensembles, pioneered in New Zealand by the Vitamin S<\/strong><\/a> collective, and in the U.K. by figures such as Derek Bailey<\/strong> in his Company<\/strong><\/a> nights \u2014 a\u00a0 format designed to be maximally impervious to advance preparation<\/em> and so generate synchronistic improv of the utmost purity.<\/p>\n

Puppy Surprise \u2014 pregnant with possible musical worlds<\/p><\/div>\n

Leading electronic and acoustic improvisers will have their names drawn from a Puppy Surprise (qua<\/em> quantum box\u2026), determining trios and quartets for approx. 7-minute sets, while spawning a combinatorial explosion of possible musical worlds.<\/p>\n

Matt Davignon is an Oakland-based experimental musician, best known for combining drum machine and voice with a variety of electronic processing devices to create an expressive, organic-sounding synthesizer. His distinctive sound palette is informed not only by past experience with field recordings, household objects, prepared instruments and live sound collage, but also his love of psychedelic and space music.<\/p>\n

Matt Davignon<\/p><\/div>\n

In addition to his solo work, Matt frequently collaborates with other improvisers. With Hugh Behm-Steinberg<\/a>, he manipulates speech recordings in the band Oa<\/strong><\/a>. He was also a member of the improvising avant-rock quartet Tiny Owl<\/strong><\/a>, and is the founder of the Pmocatat Ensemble<\/strong>, a group that performs on CD and tape recordings of their instruments.<\/p>\n

Sculptor, electronics master, photographer, and engineer [ruidobello]<\/a> (Jorge Bachmann<\/a>) is a multi-disciplinary, mixed-media and sound artist. Since the early 80s, Jorge has been exploring the strange, unique and microcosmic sounds of everyday life, collecting field recordings. The sound atmospheres created are meant for deep listening and are composed in symbiosis with the sculptural installations.<\/p>\n

He creates equally sensual and detailed oriented photo-based work; and his art explores social and sensual constructs and experiences.<\/p>\n

Starting his career in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia and then active for a long period in Lausanne, Switzerland, Jorge eventually relocated to the Bay Area and became a technical and artistic mainstay of MEDIATE\u2019s<\/a> Soundwave<\/strong> Series as well as the Engineer Scotty of the Starship SFEMF<\/a>. Now he’s returned to regularly giving solo electronic concerts such as his recent brilliant one at The Lab Serge 40-year Reunion.<\/p>\n

Ferrara Brain Pan’s<\/a> earliest musical experimentations developed in the wake of the original Punk and Industrial scenes in the late 1970s. Fresh out of high school in San Diego, she became involved with the international Mail Art scene under the tutelage of Fluxus<\/strong><\/a> artist and historian Ken Friedman<\/a>, putting her in direct contact with Genesis P-Orridge<\/strong><\/a>. Around the same time, Ferrara established fast friendship with noise music pioneer Boyd Rice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A move to San Francisco in the ’90s set off amassing and learning a formidable collection of wind instruments ranging from flute, saxophone, bass clarinet, and recorder, to non-Western wind instruments such as the didjeridu, shakuhachi (\u5c3a\u516b) and Tibetan thigh-bone trumpet, the kangling<\/em> (\u0f62\u0f90\u0f44\u0f0b\u0f42\u0fb3\u0f72\u0f44\u0f0d). During this time, she participated in the initial formation of longtime friend Timothy Hendricks’<\/a> ambient dub project 23 Degrees<\/strong>. The subsequent addition of harmonium, bowed psaltery, glockenspiel, percussion, and assorted electronics ranging from vintage oscillators and shortwave radio to digital signal processors led to a further expanded instrumental palette for Forms Of Things Unknown<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ferrara has been involved with various collaborations, including Everything But The Gargoyle<\/strong><\/a> (dark wave duo with Pixyblink<\/strong><\/a>), Darmstadt Pharmacy<\/strong><\/a> (with Ure Thrall<\/a>), and with legendary noise provocateur Boyd Rice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Philip Everett began studying drumming with Warren George<\/strong> from the Stan Kenton<\/strong> band. Warren stuck Philip in a room alone for an hour a day, told him to learn drum rudiments, and put him in advanced orchestra & marching band. Then came Bartok, Debussy, Gershwin, and New Orleans style 2nd line marches. Furthering his studies, Philip sought wisdom from George Marsh<\/a> & Eddie Moore<\/strong>, from whom he was taught the finer subtleties of the drums. Phillip states, “These guys taught me to relax and trust my own instincts and that pursuit of one’s own uniqueness was not a negative quality”<\/p>\n

Armed with an array of teachings, Philip led various groups over the years, beginning in 1967 with his first group Ice<\/strong>, a psychedelic R & B group who opened for bands like Canned Heat<\/strong> & Sweetwater<\/strong>. Then he started Arrival<\/strong>, a band featuring the electronics of David Toby<\/strong> & bassist Ray Schaeffer<\/a>, and combining elements of hard rock, folk, world music, electronic improvisation & composition. Next, Philip’s restless imagination led him to form Sound Oasis<\/strong>, a jazz sextet. A later stage saw Philip making a living with various country & western groups including his own The Homewreckers<\/strong> and The Ghettobillys<\/strong> \u2014 but he was unfulfilled. He decided to leave it all and devote himself to sonic exploration, deepening his involvement with electronics and the unorthodox (unholy\u2026?) electrification of various acoustic instruments.<\/p>\n

His current projects include Tri-Cornered Tent Show<\/strong><\/a>, an improv group that explores music inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, various ensembles with saxophonist Rent Romus<\/a> (including The Abstractions<\/strong> and Lords of Outland<\/strong><\/a>), and writing experimental country music for his project White Buffalo, Midwestern Gothic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Among the Cthulhic highlights of his current kit is the unique sound of an electrified (and highly distressed) auto-harp, fed through a maze of FX boxes.<\/p>\n

Special interests include applying AI techniques from expert systems, natural language processing, and computational linguistics to music; and the intersection of traditional Asian musics with modernism.<\/p>\n

Collette McCaslin<\/a> is a frequently heard Bay Area-based improviser, noisician, and video artist. Her art is a blending of genres pulling from abstract and avant-garde traditions.<\/p>\n

Her electronic work is unique and she\u2019s a pioneer of blending radical electronics with free jazz acoustic ensembles like Rent Romus<\/a>‘ Lords Of Outland<\/strong><\/a> and vocalists like Laurie Amat<\/a> to stunning effect. Her trumpet lines are paradoxically fluid and dry at the same time \u2014 and always beautiful.<\/p>\n

Collette plays trumpet and analog FX boxes configured in a \u201cno-input\u201d design which allows for the creation of sonic feedback and feedback sounds without the use of a typical sound source\u2026 her noise projects are currently created using the electrical signal that is within her gear.<\/p>\n

Collette is a regular member of Rent Romus<\/a>‘ Lords Of Outland<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and plays frequently with other Bay Area avant ensembles. In addition, she\u2019s performed at the NorCal Noise Fest, The Big Sur Experimental Music Festival, The Oakland Noise Festival, and at the Spring Reverb experimental music festival in San Diego.<\/p>\n

As a producer and artist business activist he runs Edgetone Records<\/strong><\/a> a label for all forms of improvisation and experimentation. He is the founder and Executive Director of Outsound Presents<\/strong><\/a> under which he curates the SIMM Series, the Luggage Store Series every Thursday, both in San Francisco, and The Outsound New Music Summit, a national experimental music festival held in the San Francisco Bay Area every summer in July.<\/p>\n

Pianist and composer Eli Wallace began his studies at Lawrence U. under Fred Sturm<\/strong>, Mark Urness<\/a>, and Lee Tomboulian<\/a>, and continued for a Master’s in Music (Jazz Composition) at the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Jason Moran<\/a>, Jerry Bergonzi<\/a>, Ken Schaphorst<\/a>, Frank Carlberg<\/a>, & Kati Ag\u00f3cs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since relocating to the Bay Area, Eli’s played with many musicians and ensemble in wildly different genres, e.g. Karl Evangelista’s<\/a> Ai-Ai<\/strong>, Jim Ryan’s<\/a> ensembles Virtual Assembly<\/strong> & Retro Blue<\/strong>, John Givens\u2019<\/a> No Lovely Thing<\/strong><\/a>, and Bill Wolter’s<\/strong> Inner Ear Brigade<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> and appeared on Dan Meinhardt’s<\/a> album Gone West<\/em><\/strong>. His own recent project is a series of pieces composed for solo piano that embrace his interest in jazz, improvisation & contemporary avant-garde classical music. Eli is also making waves in a new trio with Karl Evangelista<\/a> and Jon Arkin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a composer Eli’s been commissioned to write music for jazz big band, solo piano, chamber orchestra, and dance, and his piece Influx Rebellion<\/em><\/strong> was well-received at the EarShot Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute Readings (in affiliation with Columbia U. \/ American Composers Orchestra).<\/p>\n
