I’m looking forward to join some of the Bay Area\u2019s most daring improvising musicians for an evening of \u201cpercussion++\u201d and\u00a0rhythmic space exploration of pitch, timbre, and electronics nebulae, shining in electroacoustic colors far beyond the visible spectrum.<\/p>\n

And I’m excited to play again with percussion genius Donald\u00a0Robinson<\/a>, whose advanced cymbal technique and incredibly refined musical taste make him an inspiring partner for both the freest of jazz and the wildest of electronic space walks.<\/p>\n

Master drummer Donald Robinson<\/a>, whom Coda Magazine<\/em> has described as a \u201cpercussion Dervish\u201d, has numbered among his most notable collaborators Alan Silva<\/a>, Anthony Braxton<\/a>, Oliver Lake<\/a>, Glenn Spearman<\/strong>, Larry Ochs<\/a>, Cecil Taylor<\/a>, Wadada Leo Smith<\/a>, George Lewis<\/a>, Bobby Few<\/a>, Raph\u00e9 Malik<\/strong>, Joe McPhee<\/a>, John Tchicai<\/strong>, Marco Eneidi<\/a>, Miya Masaoka<\/a> (\u6b63\u5ca1<\/a>\u307f\u3084), Paul Plimley<\/a> & Matthew Goodheart<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Much of his work has seen him featured in the stellar rhythm section of Donald Robinson<\/a> and bassist Lisle Ellis<\/a>, especially including the band What We Live<\/strong><\/a> with Larry Ochs<\/a> on saxophones, a trio that toured in Europe and North America from 1994 \u2013 2002, sometimes with special guests such as Dave Douglas<\/a>, Wadada Leo Smith<\/a> or Kazakh vocalist Saadet T\u00fcrk\u00f6z<\/a> (\u0421\u0430\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u0422\u0443\u0440\u043a\u0451\u0437<\/a>). His longest musical association, dating from the 1970’s, was with the late tenor saxophonist Glenn Spearman<\/strong>; these two appear on something close to a dozen CDs together in sextets, quintets, and quartets with several tours to Europe<\/p>\n

After coming up in the hothouse of the Paris free jazz scene, Donald has been a stalwart of both the SF Bay Area and northern and central European avant-garde jazz scenes, frequently touring there with Biggi Vinkeloe<\/a> and Larry Ochs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to collaborate with Donald on various electroacoustic projects such as the Biggi <\/strong>Vinkeloe<\/strong><\/a> Roughtet<\/strong>, IBIM LAB<\/strong>, and the occasional quartet of Bruce Ackley<\/a> – Lisle Ellis<\/a> – Joe Lasqo<\/a> – Donald Robinson<\/a>, as well as in duo format. Not only is Don’s free jazz style always superbly on<\/em>, but his sensitivity in using percussion against electronics is unparalleled.<\/p>\n

Pianist \/ laptopist Joe Lasqo<\/a> studied classical music in India; computer\/electronic music at MIT, Columbia, Berkeley\/CNMAT; has been a long-time performing modern & avant jazz musician; & has lived, played and listened in several Asian and European countries (now in San Francisco). He\u2019s keen on the application of artificial intelligence techniques to improvisation and the meeting of traditional Asian musics with the 21st century.<\/p>\n

Joe had a weekly residency for 3\u00bd years+ in the piano series at Viracocha, will be resuming a residency at PianoFight in January 2016, and has appeared recently with Bruce Ackley<\/a> and Steve Adams<\/a> of ROVA Saxophone Quartet<\/strong><\/a>, Aaron Bennett’s<\/a> Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/strong>, Phillip Greenlief’s<\/a> Orchesperry, synthesist Thomas Dimuzio<\/a>, clarinetist\/vocalist Beth Custer<\/a>, pianist Thollem McDonas<\/a>, percussionist Suki O’Kane<\/a>, sound artists Joe Snape<\/a> (UK) & Lucie V\u00edtkov\u00e1<\/a> (Czech Rep.), technodivas \/ electronic musicians Pamela Z<\/a> &\u00a0Viv Corringham<\/a> (NYC\/London) as well as his own Renga-kai<\/strong> (\u9023\u6b4c\u4f1a<\/strong>), Mukaiji-kai<\/strong> (\u9727\u6d77\u7b8e\u4f1a<\/strong>), & Fushigi Kenky\u016bkai<\/strong> (\u4e0d\u601d\u8b70\u7814\u7a76\u4f1a<\/strong>) ensembles.<\/p>\n

A surprise last-minute bonus is Biggi Vinkeloe<\/a>, a sorceress of avant \/ jazz wind energy, and veteran of stellar collaborations with Roberto Bellatalla<\/a>, Alberto Braida<\/a>, Chris Brown<\/a>, Lisle Ellis<\/a>, Marco Eneidi<\/a>, Ken Filiano<\/a>, Gianni Gebbia<\/a>, Vinny Golia<\/a>, Giancarlo Locatelli<\/a>, Miya Masaoka<\/a> (\u6b63\u5ca1<\/a>\u307f\u3084), Barre Phillips<\/a>, Gino Robair<\/a>, Cecil Taylor<\/a>, Peeter Uuskyla<\/a>, and Marie W\u00e4rme<\/a>, among many others, who will also r\u00e9prise her long-standing collaboration with Bay Area master drummer Donald Robinson<\/a> in added duets.<\/p>\n

Fresh from Sweden and two brilliant album releases, the feminist spiritual oratorio JADE<\/em><\/strong>, and the second album of her trio with bassist Damon Smith<\/a> and tuba-ist\/trombonist Mark Weaver<\/a>, A Place Meant for Birds<\/em><\/strong>, Biggi Vinkeloe<\/a> will interweave her unique and subtle wind lines with Donald Robinson<\/a> in additional duets.<\/p>\n

au quotidien<\/em><\/strong>, a new album with Biggi Vinkeloe<\/a>, master drummer Donald Robinson<\/a>, and cello madman Teddy Rankin-Parker<\/a>, and myself, is in production for release in early 2016.<\/p>\n

duo B.<\/strong><\/a> is an ensemble of acoustic bass + percussion that plays ethereal chamber music wrapped in dense improvised soundscapes. Jason Levis<\/a> uses gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, bowed cymbals, marimba and drumset to create lush, delicate textures and abstract noise grooves.<\/p>\n

The music of composer, drummer, and percussionist Jason Levis<\/a> lives in the rich spaces where styles intersect and musical languages merge. Active in jazz, contemporary improvisation, and modern classical composition, his wide-ranging creative efforts are skillfully bound by his innate sense of timbre, sonic space, rhythmic force, and his insatiable interest in discovery. Over the years his passion and curiosity have led him to search out the intersections of musical paths less traveled (spectralist jazz, anyone?), and the resulting unique perspective is reflected in his music. Jason holds a Ph.D. in composition from UC Berkeley. Recently returned from Berlin, he currently teaches at the California Jazz Conservatory.<\/p>\n

Lisa\u00a0Mezzacappa<\/a> draws on a palette of sinister drones, punchy vamps and acoustic bass manipulations to weave storylines through gnarly rhythms, pointillistic shapes and ecstatic melodies.<\/p>\n

Lisa Mezzacappa<\/a> is a bassist, bandleader, composer, curator and producer. She leads her own groups Bait & Switch<\/strong><\/a>, Nightshade<\/strong><\/a>, Eartheaters<\/strong><\/a> & the Lisa Mezzacappa Trio<\/strong><\/a>, and co-leads the ensembles BODABODA<\/strong><\/a>, duo B.<\/strong><\/a>, Cylinder<\/strong><\/a>, the Mezzacappa-Phillips Duo<\/strong><\/a>, and the Caribbean folk band Les Gwan Jupons<\/strong><\/a>.
