The stunning series at Crane House<\/em><\/strong> in\u00a0Oakland<\/em><\/strong> has made it into one of the most interesting places to hear improv & new music in the Bay Area.\u00a0I’m excited to again be adding MSP & piano into the mix with\u00a0Aaron Bennett’s <\/strong>amazing EMTPO<\/strong> at this unique venue.<\/p>\n

If you’ve already heard the first album released by\u00a0Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/em><\/strong> (cover below) you know exactly what I’m talking about, and you’re already coming to this great show. Among Aaron’s many stellar contributions to the Bay Area improv and new music scenes (like sax trio arrangements of Bollywood standards!) \u00a0are fantastic “breathing chart” compositions for large improvising groups that deliver heightened coherence and adventure at the same time. They stand as Himalayas of group improv music. And Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/strong> is the Mt. Everest.<\/p>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n

Aaron Bennett in Space<\/p><\/div>\n

Bio note: Saxist\/composer\u00a0Aaron Bennett<\/a> has been bending space in the Bay Area jazz and improvised music communities for more than 15 years. Beyond his studies in composition and performance of western music at California Institute of the Arts, Aaron has also studied and played the music of West Africa, Indonesia, India, and Traditional Japanese\u00a0\u96c5\u697d\u00a0(Gagaku) music. He has performed throughout the United States and abroad including performances with\u00a0Wadada Leo Smith<\/a>,\u00a0Peter Kowald<\/a>,\u00a0John Butcher<\/a>,\u00a0Donald Robinson<\/a>,\u00a0Marco Eneidi<\/a>,\u00a0Gianni Gebbia<\/a>,\u00a0Weasel Walter<\/a>,\u00a0Adam Lane<\/a>,\u00a0Larry Ochs<\/a>,\u00a0Steve Adams<\/a>,\u00a0John Raskin<\/a>,\u00a0Victoria Williams<\/a>,\u00a0Aphrodesia<\/a>,\u00a0Lagos-Roots<\/a>,\u00a0The Rova Saxophone Quartet<\/a> and many others.<\/p>\n

Aaron Bennett in Time<\/p><\/div>\n

He leads his own groups\u00a0Go-Go-Fightmaster<\/a>,\u00a0Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra<\/a> and performs in the\u00a0Oakland Active Orchestra<\/a> ,\u00a0Lisa Mezzacappa’s Bait & Switch<\/a>,\u00a0Vijay Anderson Quartet<\/a>, and\u00a0Guerilla Hi-Fi<\/a>. Aaron has composed for large ensembles, chamber groups, plays, films, dance performances, wind quintet, saxophone quartets and trios as well as pieces for solo instruments.<\/p>\n

Idea Of West, album by Tony Dryer, Jacob Felix Heule, Jacob L<\/p><\/div>\n

I’ve been listening quite a bit lately to the great album Idea of West<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by “Jacob L”<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Tony Dryer<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0Jacob Felix Heule<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, and I want to particularly recommend it.<\/p>\n

Piercing and subtle, the unfolding improvisation and compositional structures emphasize purely acoustic sound production in a type of music\/sound-art more typically dominated by electronics and create a new kind of “dim-lit chamber music… the interaction of the musicians is on the contrary revealing an utmost responsiveness to the slightest movement” (Massimo Ricci). Kanoko Nishi (\u897f\u9e7f\u4e43\u5b50)... yes, that is a styrofoam plate used as a combination plectrum\/damper<\/p><\/div>\n

Kanoko Nishi (<\/em><\/strong>\u897f\u9e7f\u4e43\u5b50<\/strong>)<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is an improviser currently based in SF\/Bay Area and holds a BA in music performance from Mills College. Although her primary training is in classical piano performance, she’s also interested in improvisational music making, both solo and in collaborations with other artists. Her mastery of various extended techniques on the piano and koto (\u7b8f), in addition to more traditional techniques, is brilliant and has widened the rage of vocabularies on each instrument and enabled them to adapt to different musical genres. Kanoko also enjoys collaborating with dancers, poets and visual artists to push the limits of her musical language and find ways to communicate with other forms of performance art.<\/p>\n

Her recent interest has primarily been in performing 20th century and contemporary music on piano and koto, and free improvisation in a variety of contexts.<\/p>\n

I’m very excited to be sharing the bill with Kanoko and Jacob \u2014 can’t wait to hear what they do together!<\/p>\n
