conduction hand-signal language for large groups of improvisers, have issued many albums, and have been the highlight of the long-running London <strong>Freedom of the City<\/strong> festivals. Active in jazz, contemporary improvisation, and modern classical composition, his wide-ranging creative efforts are fueled by his innate sense of timbre, sonic space, rhythmic force, and his insatiable interest in discovery. Over the years his passion and curiosity have led him to search out the intersections of musical paths less traveled (spectralist jazz, anyone?), and the resulting unique perspective is reflected in his music. Jason holds a Ph.D. in composition from UC Berkeley. Rent has recorded and released 25+ recordings as a leader of groups and duos such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgetonerecords.com\/lordsofoutland.html\">Lords of Outland<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>The Abstractions<\/strong>, <strong>Life&#8217;s Blood<\/strong>, <strong>Bloom Project<\/strong> (w Thollem <a href=\"http:\/\/thollem.com\/\">McDonas<\/a>), <strong>Jazz On The Line<\/strong>, <strong>Guinea Pig<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong>PKD [Philip K. Dick] Vortex Project<\/strong>, as well as collaborating with innumerable avant &amp; free jazz players.<\/p>\n<p>As a producer and artist business activist he runs <a href=\"http:\/\/edgetonerecords.com\/\"><strong>Edgetone Records<\/strong><\/a> a label for all forms of improvisation and experimentation. John\u00a0has recorded and toured the U.S. and Europe as a member of the bands <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dropsy.net\/eskimo\/index.htm\"><strong><em>Eskimo<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <strong><em>The Molecules<\/em><\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tscandura.com\/SPEZZAROTTO.html\"><strong><em>Spezza Rotto<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, as a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercecunningham.org\/\"><strong><em>Merce Cunningham Dance Company<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsound.org\/\"><strong><em>sfSound<\/em><\/strong><\/a> ensemble, his own <strong><em>Triplicate<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>5\u00d75<\/em><\/strong> ensembles, for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsound.org\/\"><strong><em>sfSound<\/em><\/strong><\/a> Ensemble, and with collaborators including Anthony <a href=\"http:\/\/tricentricfoundation.org\/\">Braxton<\/a>, Eugene <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eugenechadbourne.com\/\">Chadbourne<\/a> and Jack <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springgardenmusic.com\/\">Wright<\/a>, as well as many of the great improvisers of the Bay Area scene.<\/p>\n<p>As a guitarist John\u00a0has developed a unique and personalized approach to\u00a0the guitar.
