Her compositions focus on sonification (compositions based on abstract models derived from physical objects), while in her improvisation practice explores characteristics of discrete spaces through the interaction between sound and movement. She&#8217;s studied with Martin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinsmolka.com\/en\/index.html\">Smolka<\/a>, Jaroslav <a href=\"http:\/\/hf.jamu.cz\/seznam-pedagogu\/staff\/stastny.html\">\u0160\u0165astn\u00fd<\/a>, Martijn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martijnpadding.nl\">Padding<\/a>, Gilius <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gilius_van_Bergeijk\">van Bergeijk<\/a>,\u00a0&amp; Michael <a href=\"http:\/\/directory.calarts.edu\/directory\/michael-pisaro\">Pisaro<\/a>. Her Ph.D research began at Universit\u00e4t der K\u00fcnste, Berlin, under Marc <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcsabat.com\">Sabat<\/a>, &amp;\u00a0now continues at Columbia University, where she&#8217;s a Visiting Scholar with\u00a0George <a href=\"http:\/\/music.columbia.edu\/people\/bios\/glewis\">Lewis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s analyzing music of Christian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.furious.com\/perfect\/christianwolff.html\">Wolff<\/a>, researching hierarchy &amp; social relations in his music and looking for the composition techniques which express this phenomena. His work involves combining elements of the natural and man-made world using field recordings, custom audio generation software and homemade instruments. Most recently this last propensity manifested in joining with Bay Area weirdos <a href=\"http:\/\/jackotheclock.com\/Home.html\"><b>Jack o\u2019 the Clock<\/b><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cheer-accident.com\"><b>Cheer Accident<\/b><\/a>, and longtime indie-pop band <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/lunchbox-mn0000170092\/biography\"><b>Lunchbox<\/b><\/a>, outside of which life is full of the constant hum of teaching, song-writing and recording, exploring classical music, and improvising with friends.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn studied music at Southwestern Community College, the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and most recently earned a Master\u2019s in Performance and Improvisation from Mills College.<\/p>\n<p>An instigator of supremely cool organ-related events such as <b>Drone Church<\/b>, Evelyn has contributed to some of the Bay Area&#8217;s most intriguing avant duos and trios, including musicians such as Jason <a href=\"http:\/\/jasonhoopes.com\">Hoopes<\/a>, Jennifer <a href=\"http:\/\/cnmat.berkeley.edu\/people\/jennifer_wilsey\">Wilsey<\/a>, and Phillip <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayimproviser.com\/artistdetail.asp?artist_id=117\">Greenlief<\/a>, with vocals, electronics, and a complex \u2014 simultaneously forceful and delicate \u2014 approach to the piano, focusing on the soundboard and interior playing area and unusual piano preparations.
