Jaroba<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (here shown in the wild with his kit) is a one-of-a-kind saxophonist, musical instrument inventor, and theatrical musician, currently living in Davis, CA:<\/p>\n

He is often spotted in the company of fellow musical instrument inventor and string multi-instrumentalist Keith Cary<\/a>, or consumating the unholy matrimony of disparate mouthpieces, tubing, PVC pipes, and a unique array of found resonators.<\/p>\n

A fearless deep space explorer of improvisation and instrument invention, Jaroba<\/em><\/strong><\/a> always opens the windows of my brain and lets the sunshine in. It is with great pleasure that I r\u00e9prise my collaboration with him, started last year \u2014 a journey to infinity and beyond in a homebrew go-cart spaceship.<\/p>\n

Some of his notable musical projects include work with Liberation Surrealist Duo<\/em><\/strong> (what acronym does that make\u2026?), featuring Jared Alberico<\/a> and Nick Wilson<\/em><\/strong> of Chicago, Minneapolis Improv Orchestra<\/em><\/strong>, Duke Resonant Orchestra<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Nuclear Mystery Temple<\/em><\/strong>, ESP<\/em><\/strong>, and Howloosanation<\/em><\/strong> (including performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, for the\u00a0John Cage MusiCircus<\/a><\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Aside from forging new paths with instruments like the Mastertron<\/em><\/strong> and the Plassoon<\/em><\/strong>, another speciality of Jaroba’s<\/em><\/strong><\/a> <\/em><\/strong>is music for theatre, including two soundtracks for filmmaker Harvey Stein<\/a>, and works for the Flatwater Shakespeare Company<\/em><\/strong> for The Tempest, Measure for Measure, Henry V<\/em><\/strong>, and Macbeth<\/em><\/strong>. Jaroba<\/em><\/strong><\/a> received “Best New Music” from Kennedy Center for his contribution to the Tom Stoppard play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Acoustic show<\/em><\/strong>: piano + invented instruments & sax, two special acoustic sets at 4pm<\/span><\/strong> and 5pm, Wed 7 Nov<\/span><\/strong> during my regular booking at Viracocha <\/strong>(NW corner of 21st & Valencia, San Francisco<\/a>).<\/p>\n

In both shows, the emphasis will be on free improv mixed with selected compositions such as Jaroba’s 12-tone chart\u00a0Dodecaphone<\/em><\/strong> and some of my\u00a0k\u1e5bti<\/em> compositions involving special timbral klangfarben<\/em> meta-r\u0101gas.<\/p>\n

For the Luna’s<\/em><\/strong><\/a> show, 7:30pm, Mon 5 Nov<\/span><\/strong>, we will be joined by the Jim Ryan Trio<\/em><\/strong> (set order TBD).<\/p>\n

Infected by bebop at a tender age,\u00a0Jim Ryan<\/a><\/em><\/strong> first took up the trombone in Minnesota, and by Mai \u201968 was playing flute & sax, living in Paris, and jamming and performing with musicians like\u00a0Sunny Murray<\/a>, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra,\u00a0Archie Shepp<\/a> &\u00a0Anthony Braxton<\/a>, then shortly afterward beginning his musical association with\u00a0Steve Lacy.<\/p>\n

Jim Ryan<\/p><\/div>\n

After stretching the boundaries of improv with the \u201cFree Music Formation\u201d in Paris and other European cities, Jim returned to the US, first jolting the scene in Washington, D.C., then moving to the Bay Area not so long before the Loma Prieta Earthquake (coincidence\u2026?)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Since then, Jim has led a remarkable variety of improv groups, e.g.\u00a0Green Alembic<\/span>,\u00a0Dark Precursor,\u00a0\u00a0Forward Energy<\/a>,\u00a0Left Coast Improv Group<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the\u00a0Electro\/Acoustic Sextet of Oakland, Subjects of Desire<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0Retro Blue<\/em><\/strong>, as well as participating in\u00a0Marco Eneidi<\/a>\u2018s \u201cAmerican Jungle Orchestra<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d and the\u00a0Orchestra for World Peace<\/em><\/strong> of\u00a0Sun Ra<\/em><\/strong> trumpeter\u00a0Eddie Gale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those who\u2019ve heard Jim play have never been the same, and, after hearing his poems about surrealist elf sexuality, or seeing the powerful color energies of his paintings, are often never the same all over again.<\/p>\n

His ensemble for this outing, Dark Precursor<\/em><\/strong>, \u00a0includes master bassist Scott Walton and drummer\/gamelanist Mark E. Miller<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Scott Walton<\/p><\/div>\n

Bassist and pianist\u00a0Scott Walton’s<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>interests cut across musical genres. He has collaborated with poets, dancers, performance artists, filmmakers, and multimedia artists, especially in and around L.A. Recent projects include work with the Vinny Golia Quintet<\/em><\/strong> (Vinny Golia<\/a>, Michael Vlatkovich<\/a>, Nels Cline<\/a> and Alex Cline<\/a>), Cosmologic<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (w Jason Robinson<\/a>, Michael Dessen<\/a>, Nathan Hubbard<\/a>), the Rain Trio<\/em><\/strong> (w Eric Barber<\/a>, Alex Cline<\/a>), and O’Keefe, Stanyek, Walton, Whitehead<\/em><\/strong> (Pat O’Keefe<\/a>, Jason Stanyek<\/a>, Glen Whitehead<\/a>).<\/p>\n

As a bassist he has also recorded with George Lewis<\/a>, Bobby Bradford<\/a>, Anthony Davis<\/a>, and Carmell Jones<\/em><\/strong>, and has performed with Wadada Leo Smith<\/a>, John Carter<\/em><\/strong>, J.D. Parran<\/a>, Gerry Hemingway<\/a>, Quincy Troupe<\/a>, Ray Anderson<\/a>, John Abercrombie<\/a>, Phillip Gelb<\/a>, Davey Williams<\/a>, Toshiko Akiyoshi (\u79cb\u5409\u654f\u5b50)<\/a>, Clifford Jordan<\/em><\/strong>, Al Cohn<\/em><\/strong>, Buddy Tate<\/em><\/strong>, and Frank Wess<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mark E. Miller, drummer, studied gamelan in Java for two years, worked in NYC from the late 70’s into the 90’s performing and recording — notably with the band Toy Killers<\/em><\/strong><\/a> that included Bill Laswell<\/a>, Elliott Sharp<\/a>, Wayne Horvitz<\/a>, John Zorn<\/a>, and others (firecrackers and other explosives often featured in these largely improvised performances…).\u00a0 A new Toy Killers<\/em><\/strong><\/a> album Awayward<\/em><\/strong>, with Charlie Noyes<\/em><\/strong>, Weasel Walter<\/a>, Henry Kaiser<\/a>, Damon Smith<\/a>, and others is about to be released.\u00a0 Mark is currently recording and performing in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n
